Today, Ana Paula receives the Martin Ennals Award in Geneva, widely known as the “Nobel Prize of #HumanRights.” This global recognition reflects her courage, resilience, and leadership in confronting state violence.

Even facing a system where, according to research by Fórum Justiça, 91% of inquiries into police killings in Rio were closed without charges, Ana Paula pushed forward. Her persistence led to the rare conviction of the officer responsible for her son’s death.

In 2013, more than 1 million people took the streets across Brazil to protest the human rights violations linked to the 2014 #FIFAWorldCup and 2016 #Olympics - including rising police killings of young Black men in Rio.

The #SRA stands in solidarity with the families of the Ninho do Urubu victims and all those fighting to ensure that such a tragedy never happens again.
