Day lilies are beautiful but they only live one day (hence the name) and then they are replaced by endless others. I thought they were such a striking analogy for women who are used for their looks or their sexuality in society and various industries. Note: Day Lilies is one of two poems in Flower Girls that I actually wrote before this project and were included in other books. It was also included in Slut Shamed (Inappropriate Feminist Poems). The only other poem in Flower Girls that's from the past is Taraxacum Officinalis (the Latin word for dandelion), a poem I wrote about my mother years ago. That one is in Crazy Broken Thing, my first book in the Poems from the Attic series. Day Lilies Freckled redheads and bone-pale blondes Clustered in natural bouquets Spreading themselves at the sun With slippery skin unfolding to please you Tassels of tonsils tickling your eyes She is a woman made of lips and tongue Of skin made to bloom once With one day of beauty, no time for grace Straining to outshine A hundred others on the vine all for you all for you She curls into herself, tucks her soft face And drops The wind stirs a thousand sleeping ladies Who have had their day And who, after all could mourn one flower? Working on my latest project, a book (and possible short movie) about how the loon got the ring around his neck. I wrote it out fully today, and I like how it sounds. It needs to be told like you're telling a legend. Pretend you're sitting around a campfire.
