The title is actually a double entendre... as in 'hard to hold' and... the original idea was to cover the handle with a mosaic of broken eggshells... which had to be removed before applying the dried rose thorns.

After releasing the shape on the band saw I turned it on edge and sawed a kerf down the center... which made room for a contrasting veneer to be added.

This spoon came from a 'live edge' 5' hockey stick slab of Serviceberry wood that had beautiful grain. The top bark edge is riddled with worm holes (live occupants at the time).

All three of these spoons were carved in Lilac wood. Lilac is a very fine grained wood that holds even the finest detail. The branches have a tendency to split very badly as they dry... but the solid wood between the cracks are well worth working with.

All three of these spoons were carved in Lilac wood. Lilac is a very fine grained wood that holds even the finest detail. The branches have a tendency to split very badly as they dry... but the solid wood between the cracks are well worth working with.

'Looking Back' ~ Wooden spoon carved in Huon Pine.
Right now I can't recall the wood type on the second spoon... but the interior lamination was knife handle material that a shop neighbor gave me. I re-cut that and glued it up diagonally.
