"Liberating the spoon from a mere hand-to-mouth existence."

Exploring the creative process within the constraints of the wooden spoon... and sometimes, outside of those constraints.

All four of these spoons were carved from Australian wood 'Conkerberry'. The wood tends to split and so large pieces are not to be found... but the wood itself is gorgeous to work with, very fine grained... like Boxwood or Lilac.. and the color is intense orange.

'Craters' ~ Wooden spoon carved from the same piece of Australian Plum as yesterday's spoon ('Criss-Cross'). This turned out to be a really nice carving wood.

Thanks! The other half of the branch (sent to me from an Aussie spoon carver) yielded another spoon that will be tomorrow's post.

Yes... I had to sort of customize an extension for a carving burr... I used a hollow aluminum tool and friction fitted the burr and that allowed me to hollow the full depth.

'Criss Cross' ~ Wooden spoon carved in Australian Brown Plum wood. This one sat half finished on the workbench for a year or two before taking off in this direction. Handle is hollow.

The 'Dance' spoon was carved in Lignum Vitae... and later on I ran the image through one of those online A.I. image generators (with various prompts) and while maintaining the overall shape of the original piece the process produced at least 50 'attractive' ideas in a fairly short time.

'Devil's Diet Plan' ~ Another spoon in the 'Thorns' series.

A friend brought back this decaying piece of Live Oak from a camping trip and it was combined with black lacquered Locust thorns... and the tips were dipped in red acrylic paint.

'Double Header' ~ Wooden spoon carved in Ebony, Bloodwood and Holly.

This was a decent idea but the choice of woods was way off. The line down the middle should have been much thinner... and the handle and bowl woods could have been more harmoniously matched.

On that one I was actually trying to do a sort of undulating ribbon that wrapped around the spoon with the 'curls' becoming smaller toward the bowl... (similar to this image but 4 sided) and I couldn't figure it out.

Sometimes Ebony can look metallic. Thanks for looking.

'Duck Scoop' ~ Desert Ironwood (I think)

'Ear Wings' ~ Two toned Cedar wood. (Admittedly, a terrible carving job... but the idea is still funny to me.)

'Ebony Circle Template' ~ Never really finished carving this spoon.... lost interest.

'Ebony Serpentine' ~ Ebony sapwood.

That piece of walnut was so 'plain' looking compared to others I've worked with.

It does have a batty look to it.

Funny... now that I think of it... I never tried carving a spork.

Palm wood can be difficult to work with. Those 'flecks' are resinous and harder than the surrounding lighter area of the wood.. which makes it want to splinter. But that difference also makes for a nice effect when bleaching.
