I asked an American friend of mine who has been living in Istanbul for a decade what he likes the most about living there. He said his wife and all the dogs ❤️

The city makes sure the dogs that hang out on the streets are vaccinated each year.

Istanbul loves their dogs though. They’re all over the place.

Almost every town has a pretty cheap laundrette where you can wash your stuff. One time sink washing was enough for me. Now I just pay a few dollars to wash stuff after a week or whatever.

How in the world can you sleep in that heat? I finally broke down last year and got a portable ac because Seattle summers have a lot more hot days than they used to

Oh yeah, that would slick back *really* nice!

Good luck! I hope you recover quickly… jet lag kicks my ass!

Feel free to ping me with any questions or if you need any encouragement. Reddit also has a pretty decent community. /r/amateurradio

Totally understandable and common! One of the best parts about the ham radio community is their sense of mentorship. Not sure where the name came from, but they call mentors “elmers” for some reason. It’s an important part of the hobby. Lots of folks out there willing to help

Oh also, the headquarters of the main Ham radio org, ARRL, is located in Connecticut as is their station W1AW, that hams from all over travel to operate. www.arrl.org/w1aw
W1AW
The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) is the national association for amateur radio, connecting hams around the U.S. with news, information and resources.

I don’t know specifically about Connecticut, but it looks like there are several radio clubs there. What are you skittish about?

100%. The only current workaround is a P.O. Box and that sucks too

I say that about radios every time a new one comes out haha. “I already have enough radios”

In ham radio world, there is APRS, which is a really interesting, fairly reliable messaging platform that is gated to the Internet, so you can reach people outside of a disaster zone and even route messages to non-licensed people through SMS. Radio to text message and back. Cool stuff.
July 6, 2025 at 1:51 AM
Meshcore routes messages differently in an attempt to be more reliable, so that’s the main reason to try it imo.
July 6, 2025 at 1:46 AM
Yeah same. I was really excited about the possibility of low power, long range, license-free communications particularly for emergencies. But sadly the current LoRa stuff just isn’t quite there yet. Part of the issue is just physics, and how they route messages to each other. Hope it’ll get there.

Meshtastic is fun, but it’s super unreliable and I wouldn’t count on it for any emergencies in its current state. meshcore is looking good too, so check that out if you haven’t yet.

Ham radio has never really died out, just adapted over the years. It’s got more licensed folks than ever and there was a huge surge during Covid. It’s super fun and has like a thousand different sub hobbies, so it’s slightly different for everyone. Super easy to get licensed these days too!

Everclear! Legit
July 5, 2025 at 2:34 AM
Oh hell yes, pass it on brother!
July 5, 2025 at 2:31 AM
Oh! I ride by that place all the time and wonder if it’s any good but haven’t stopped in yet.
