One of my absolute favorite techniques in animation gets a thoroughly obsessive breakdown here:
This style of light doesn't really appear in animation anymore. You know it when you see it -- it's bright, hot and almost dangerous.

Our new issue explores the tricks behind it, and how one artist has revived the look for the digital age: animationobsessive.substack.com/p/dangerous-...

Working entirely independently, spktra wrote, directed, edited, colored, and composited the film himself, collaborating with just two animators and a veteran 'Batman Beyond' character designer to nail the video's '90s cel animation aesthetic.

I have zero connection to animation other than having watched it, but this article about technical lighting effects in cel animation and how these analog processes created effects almost impossible to replicate digitally is INCREDIBLY interesting!

This is such a cool, cool read. It feels really good to see spktra thinking along lines that I can understand, and seeing the result of applying that thinking!

Fantastic breakdown over at @ani-obsessive.bsky.social of how to digitally emulate an analog style light glow by spktra (Josh Fagin)

Lots of similarities with work we've been doing in AgBr.app

I wrote an article for my favorite substack, @ani-obsessive.bsky.social about the research and technique that went into making the light in Spirit Jumper.

Very cool and enlightening article on @ani-obsessive.bsky.social about how to achieve the backlit glows from 80's-90's cel animation, as shown in @spktraspktra.bsky.social's new music video: animationobsessive.substack.com/p/dangerous-...

@thesaintoftous.bsky.social hey Toussaint! We spent 5 years replicating the look of traditional cel animation for the animated music video to my single Spirit Jumper - I think it'd be right up your alley! www.youtube.com/watch?v=AC_8...

Did an interview with @cartoonbrew about the 5 year production behind Spirit Jumper. Looking back through my research notes, I had a number of interviews they’d done over the years so it was an honor to be interviewed at all on the website. Thank you Jamie!
