If in 2025 a social media platform has this much hate on it, it is because the owners have chosen to allow it.

We need people in charge of social media who care about people's safety
Normal day for a wāhine Māori, Green Party MP online. Studied ~400 comments on FB/Twitter on Tamatha Paul's recent comments, incl. on Instagram www.instagram.com/p/DLg5Jz-Jyg... to decolonialise memorialisation. 0 intellectual engagement present in online ecologies studied. Just a frothing hate.

The tech giants want to use their tech to isolate us, but we don't have to accept it.

We can choose to use tech that connects us rather than isolates us

What if we optimised technology for people instead of advertisers and investors?

Huge shoutout to @jpm-nz.bsky.social for implementing our first human centred adaptive algorithm (or AI✨)

#BigTech can't be trusted. When put to the test they always put profits ahead of doing the right thing.

If we want something better, we're going to have to build it ourselves

I keep catching strays from "technology is neutral" people, so let's set things straight.

1) Technology is not neutral, especially the subset of technology called "algorithms"
2) The form-factor that makes a technology into a tool is not neutral
3) How tools are productized is not neutral

We urgently need to start building alternative, cooperatively owned tech.
A lot of the pieces are in place. Piece by piece we can replace the silicon valley eco system with one that works for people instead of tech billionaires.
🚨🇳🇿 Join me in Auckland on April 10 where I’ll be talking about countering the Trump threat and escaping the dominance Silicon Valley has over our lives.

Now more than ever, we need digital sovereignty — and we’ll need to work together to build it.

Social media commands the flow of both information and money, reinforcing the right's grip.

It's a key battleground for retaking society from right wing billionaires

That's why we're building a cooperative alternative: Speakeasy.

There's a lot of work to do, but we've got to start somewhere
1. What you see here is clearest illustration why things are so messed up and why it cannot get any better until this asymmetry is addressed.

Put simply: the right-wing has narrative dominance.

My org @mmfa.bsky.social did this study and has been sounding this alarm for years. Some thoughts...
