I work full time, but I am doing an honours program on Polistes wasps. I love social insects, and am keeping ants as well. I'd love to connect with other entomology students and insect fans.
Doing work on invasive Polistes species at the moment, and found a very worrying observation on iNaturalist. We don't want this kind of cruise passenger! It does show how sites like iNaturalist can be really helpful sometimes.

Yellow Oriental Paper Wasp (Polistes olivaceus)
Yellow Oriental Paper Wasp on May 24, 2024 at 12:06 PM by Nadine Gaffney. Observed P&O cruise ship so must have hitched a ride from elsewhere :)

Banded sugar ants (Camponotus consobrinus) are about to have their nuptial flight. I've found they usually wait until the week between Christmas and New Year's, but it's been hot and wet enough for them to start early this year.

@waspwoman.bsky.social Hi, I'm reading "Endless Forms" and loving it. I just have a question - did you work on a paper about this in a study in Brazil? You were mentioned in the link on the page as the principal researcher abroad: agencia.fapesp.br/wasps-that-s...
Wasps that share food with neighbors
Brazilian researchers discover that in modified environments, Polistes satan wasps build nearby collaborative nests that function as a supercolony.

I am about to start an honours program based on the paper wasps of Christmas Island. I'd love to connect with students and entomologists on Bluesky 😊 #entomology
