[hastily throws blanket over the corpse of Richard Nixon] Thanks! We try!

Not that we're seeing what happened before or after or just outside the door or who didn't show up, etc., but regardless the students are not the ones with a moral obligation in that moment.

Summers is, and as usual he's shitting the bed, along with whatever admin blessed his continuing presence.

this is by far the most hurtful thing anyone has ever said on the internet

I'd argue that he's shown over and over again that he can and will do any amount of extralegal spending he wants, but agree to disagree.

Besides, then he can scream about how communist judges stopped him from giving you your money back, which is probably politically better for him anyway.

Let's say your father changes his will and gives it to you to file. It's all valid, but instead of filing that, you file something you wrote yourself that amounts to pretty much the same thing.

You might not go to jail, but under no circumstances will they accept your paraphrase as the actual will.

It's not at all unlikely that he'll do this, law be damned.

What would be stupid is to expect good macroeconomic things to come from it long-term, but I doubt that's what this waitress was saying. That's the thing about actually needing $2K. You don't get the luxury of thinking about the long term.

Also I think there's a real difference in how the parties treat the question of approval/right track/generic ballot now. Biden at 38% and Trump at 38% aren't the same thing.

E.g., I liked Biden fine and I'd have hesitated about "approval" if asked in 2022. I don't think my MAGA counterpart would.

I understand what you're saying, but for unrelated reasons I think the correlation between "you filed hallucinated garbage" and "you will be audited" is basically broken for the time being.

I deeply disapprove of partisan gerrymanders, doubly so in the middle of a census cycle. It all trends inexorably toward entrenched one-party minority rule.

But if the result of Trump trying to go nuclear is that there's a net Democratic gerrymander, that will be so fucking funny.

William Safire was loathesome to his core, and I mean as a person and a pundit. But at least you could imagine having a beer with him talking shit about dangling modifiers.

do you know Mr. Met?
November 18, 2025 at 5:56 PM
yeah, seeing the ridiculously evil polluter-villains on "Captain Planet" always lose did not prepare me for a world in which the duly elected President of the United States would have sworn an oath of blood vengeance against windmills

get their ass Madame Mayor

my gold-plated limited edition "TRUMP DID NOTHING WRONG!!!!!! FAKE NEWS DEMOCRAT HOAX!!!" commemorative coin for sale at whitehouse.gov is raising questions already answered by my coin

In all seriousness, this is why he should have stuck to sports. This kind of confident wrongness is essential there! The hot take is its own reward because ultimately nobody lives or dies by it. That's why we love sports.

Politics, at which he is even worse, though…

This is kind of the ultimate self-refuting argument. Parties can just decide to win! Yeah, man, and if it were that easy you could have decided to write a post that wouldn't have the entire internet dunking on it this morning, but you didn't, so maybe it's not quite that simple.

I love the defensive hair-washing reference. "I am one of those people with hair. I have so much hair that it requires regular washing. I understand many people don't have my quantity of hair, which is why I'm explaining it."

An ounce of working brain matter left and that's what it's doing.

We're going to send the labor market to a quiet farm out in the country where it can rest up, and then go run and play in the fields all day.
November 17, 2025 at 8:49 PM
Normally I don't question the political instincts of the GOP. They've brazened their way through a lot of shit I thought would destroy them.

But I really think they're underestimating the capacity of the American people to accept a bribe with zero gratitude and then do whatever they want anyway.

look, equipment adjustments are equipment adjustments

if this is what the pitch clock cost us then the price is too high

I wonder about this. I'm 100% sure she has people she considers herself close to who are egging her on because they love the drama and spectacle.

If there are people who genuinely care about her as a person, though, they're probably hurting right now (even if she isn't) and that sucks.
November 17, 2025 at 4:45 PM
Yeah, as a tactical matter, I hate to say it but this makes sense. Hold a MASSIVE ceremony to sign the bill, then immediately "release" a few scraps of paper with Bill Clinton's name on them and a crayon drawing of Trump wearing a medal that says "INNOCENT."

We'll see I guess.

I'd like to apologize to Keir Starmer because I didn't realize he and his party had been placed under such a powerful curse, this explains everything
