If there's a question about whether you're the 12th or 13th best team in the country, you have no business claiming you deserve a chance at saying you're the best team in the country.

Playoff ranking discussions in college sports truly only exists to increase ratings as it gives listeners/viewers something arbitrary to debate. It stopped being about finding the best team years ago.

The explanation I've given over the years is a variation of "the only way someone can be punished for crimes here is under the constitution and the laws enacted pursuant thereto. To say someone is subject to the penalties under the law requires that someone similarly be availed of the protections.
