Everything is terrible so here are two cool guys I found around my yard/pond today.

It snowed in South Carolina and the pond froze up! Chipping Sparrow on ice and Hooded Mergansers being unbothered.

Every time @edsbs.bsky.social says something nice about the Gamecocks an SC fan gets a nickname like “Catfish” or “Pluff Mud”. I lived through 0-21 and Will Muschamp so having a fun team and a fun player that ball knowers enjoy is a Got Damned Christmas Miracle
Do I think Indiana should have been left out, absolutely not, do I believe South Carolina should be allowed to wait in blimps over playoff games ready to parachute in, yes

Diego Pavia should get to play college football for as long as he wants provided he defeats Hugh Freeze at least once each season.
Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia's motion for a preliminary injunction that would allow him to play in 2025 has been GRANTED.

Everything else aside, my Gamecocks beat this playoff bound Clemson team in their building, stymied their offense, and made their tackling look Pop Warner level at times. Refs stole the LSU game, we shot ourselves at Bama. What could have been!?

A little bummed my Gamecocks aren’t in the playoff conversation (beat Alabama next time) but I can watch todays games comfortable and content in the knowledge that no matter what happens our boys beat Clemson in their house last week in front of God and everyone.

It’s cold in SC! Christmas hearth/mantle fire.

This evening’s addition to the pond, 2 pair of Hooded Mergansers. Beautiful little ducks that eat primarily small fish and dive/swim very well underwater.

Squash casserole, cream cheese bars, potatoes ready to mash. Hooray for carbs and gravy and cheese!

Green Anole (Anolis carolinensis) helping with the yard work. Our most common lizard is also a fantastic color shifter and think we aren’t in awe enough of the cool things around us. Kids and I found 4 on the sunny side of the house.

First good hit of cold air in the south and like magic I have 3 Hooded Mergansers on the pond. Thanks nature, you’re the best!

New Year’s Day Hooded Mergansers and meal. Wanted to do Hopping John with field peas but had none so settled for Collards, Black-eyed peas, pork, smoked chicken, sweet potato, and rutabagas.

Red Shouldered Hawk. One of a nesting pair that live in the area. Early morning watch for squirrels perhaps?

3 hooded Mergansers, 1 great Blue Heron, 1 egret, on my pond today. Love the winter friends!
