In 1994, the US persuaded Ukraine to give up its nuclear arms in exchange for ensuring its borders into the future, in the Budapest Memorandum. Under that agreement, the US is on Ukraine’s side in maintaining its borders and in it the US also agreed not to extort and/or exploit Ukraine.
