I once read a story about a future where "Christmas Season" is ultra commercialized and runs summer through December 25, and a marketing person is confused that his religious friend's family "only celebrates Christmas on the last day".

I'll never stop being surprised when I discover a team or project or community who have coordinated on a single dev tool stack to the point that it's nearly impossible to get the project working, let alone debug it, using any other stack.

You might say that those reliving experience increase the quality of the nine mediocre years, but that doesn't really get at the point here. A lot of uses of the QALY metric look at individual experiences and the value of single years.

Consider one amazing year and nine mediocre years. If the amazing year comes at the beginning, then I can relive those memories over and over, increasing the total value I get from that year. I think the decade where it comes at the end would usually be overall worse.
