The last time I was unemployed I started up a Tumblr to try and get some miscellaneous writing together, and considering it's 2025, I've decided to do the same with a Patreon:

Real early thoughts on that Oblivion remaster - I like most everything except the dungeon map. That's an odd way of doing it. Apart from that, it's very much Oblivion with a cooler coat of paint. Great to be immersed in a big ol' sprawl of a Bethesda game.

I saw credits roll on FFVII Rebirth and boy, do I have some strong opinions on that one. I'm copying this from a Discord discussion I had about it, because I'm feeling lazy and irritated.

Trying to finish writing one last book before I have to have eye surgery so I have something bringing in income for me, but also I have FFVII Rebirth and Oblivion to play. Not enough hours in the day.

Getting a job in games media seemed almost unattainable when I broke in back in 2005. In the years since, it’s become almost impossible and ultimately inadvisable. I can’t imagine trying to break in today.

Independent is pretty much the only option now. Support your favorite creators directly.

I am old enough to vaguely remember video games being in the $80-90 range but ooof, that is asking a LOT from consumers right now, especially with no first-party budget branding like the Olden Days of the Wii generation.

Atomfall is Steam Deck compatible and on a pretty good Fanatical sale, so.... hmmmm. Anyone played that? Any thoughts?

I might be buying brand-new kitchen knives. I'm forty-two and I've never, not once, bought a knife brand-new. This is weird and frightening and it's going to end in me cutting off my knee or something.

I think I'm about finished with Marvel Snap. It's still a really fantastic card battler but there's a definite artificial ceiling to it. Either you can afford to keep up with all the available cards to stay on top of the current best decks or wach your favorites get nerfed to oblivion.

The ebook of my first novel, METROPHAGE—a cyberpunk action/mystery story—is on sale for $1.99 in all your favorite formats. That's a lot cheaper than the erotic cake delivery app on your phone that you don’t want your friends to know about but use weekly.

One thing about Minecraft, man, even the most pedestrian update still gives me a pleasant chill jolt when I find something new in the world. Leaves on the ground? Sweet!

More thoughts on FFVII Rebirth:

The pacing towards the Corel section is weird, but the train cart section is so silly that I kinda love it. The game also continues to have big things happen like a Rude encounter that no one talks about afterwards like it never happened and it's weird.

Wait, is it still an internal monologue if it's written (mostly) in first-person? Huh.

I've been reading a lot of good stuff lately but an especially big shout-out to @sgj.bsky.social and "Mongrels," which I finally listened to this last week. Can't stop thinking about how pitch-perfect his dialogue and inner monologues are. Fantastic novel if you're into horror as a character study.

A heartbreaking and poignant look at the war in Ukraine, as framed through the trials of a game development studio. Definitely worth a watch no matter where you fall on the political specturm.

I've been playing that second FFVII remake and by and large I think it's pretty solid, but man, it's jarring going from how alive Kalm feels to the utter nothingness of the plains. Some people traversing the roads or more people scattered about would have gone a long way.

One of my big problems with Two Point Museum is that a lot of the objectives can only be done in specific ways, forcing you to be less creative and more focused on the narrow ways to create a perfect environment. The desert and space museums in particular suffer for this.

Been playing a lot of Two Point Museum. it's sometimes a little obtuse in what you need to know and the UI is a cluttered nonsensical mess (not to mention the tiny fonts), but those continue to be really fun games.

I've never been more ambivalent about the Royal Rumble winners. I don't like the philosophy of "twenty-five of these people have been working their ass off for this company recently so let's give the WM spot to someone coming off a vacay," but I get it from a business perspective, I guess.
