One year from today, #NASA probe #Voyager1 will be one light day - 25.9 billion kilometers/16 billion miles - from Earth.

Voyager carries greetings from all humanity.
We're no longer just a spacefaring species.
We're now a starfaring species.

On each #VeteransDay I think of James Wood King, my great-great grandfather, who served in the Union Army in the U.S. Civil War.

Nominated for the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Missionary Ridge, his life is chronicled in the book “Conspicuous Gallantry” by my brother Eric Faust.

#OTD in 2000, the first crew arrived at the fledgling International Space Station. Every day since, humans have been living and working in space.

The #ISS has grown tremendously since then, and continues to be an extraordinary example of what human beings can do if they choose to work together.

Today, the Earth suffered an inevitable but irreplaceable loss. I wish all of us could inherit just a bit of the compassion, patience, persistence, and wisdom of Jane Goodall.

#NASA is celebrating its 67th birthday - under a senseless government shutdown. Just think of the morale boost this is providing to the agency.

#OTD in 1980, Carl Sagan’s “COSMOS: A Personal Voyage” premiered on PBS.

I already had a deep interest in astronomy, but it opened my young mind to chemistry, biology, the history of science, and to the threat that we humans pose, not only to ourselves but to life on our precious planet.

#OTD in 1992, Mae Jemison became first African-American woman in space.

In 1993, she appeared in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. On set, she met Nichelle Nichols, Lt. Uhura on the original Star Trek. Nichols was the key figure in recruiting NASA’s first female and minority astronauts.

#OTD in 1966, the seminal science fiction series #StarTrek debuted on American television.

It and subsequent series and films inspired generations to become scientists, engineers, doctors, and even astronauts. And it offered a hopeful, diverse view of the future.

#OTD in 1989, #Voyager2 looked back and saw a crescent #Triton transiting a crescent #Neptune. Voyager's grand planetary tour was over, though its mission would continue to the outer heliosphere and beyond into interstellar space.

There was a big high wall there that tried to stop me
Sign was painted, said, "Private Property"
But on the back side, it didn't say nothing
This land was made for you and me

#OTD in 1989, #Voyager2 flew past #Neptune, imaging the planet up-close for the first-ever and so far only time.

A few hours later, the probe swept past #Triton, Neptune’s largest moon. Voyager 2 imagery captured geysers of nitrogen erupting from the surface!
