Brilliant night.

Last night's setlist from the birthday celebrations at Mono, thanks so much to all who came. Crossed wires with the venue meant that I couldn't play anything from CD, thankfully I had everything on a tablet as well which got a fair bit of use. All worth it to have the chance to PLAY LOUD.

Happy birthday to Pete and Jason!

A festive follow-up to the earlier collaboration between Helicon and Will, and one I’m sure we can all sympathise with. This will shortly be released with proceeds going to a yet-to-be-decided charity.

This fun mix of Revolution was made by a longstanding Spacemen 3 fan and friend, who often saw them in the ‘80s.

I just love the extent to which they keep the two-chord drone going before coming back for the final verse. Yeah, anyone could have done this. But Spacemen 3 actually did it.

Not really an alternate mix, this version of WWJ dates from a 1987 rehearsal, and is unavailable elsewhere. It’s my favourite “loud” version, preferable to the over-trebly single.

A rocker from Spiritualized’s “garage” album, and still instantly exciting.

I was very excited when the War Sucks EP came out, it looked like Spectrum’s long-rumoured album On The Wings Of Mercury might well be on the way. Pete’s since gone in different directions and has made some great records, but some of us hope he will pick up a guitar again!

This fun song from Mark Refoy and Johhny Mattock was written about the character of the same name from the BBC comedy Ideal. Ideal’s creator Graham Duff had previously used Slipstream music in the programme’s soundtrack.

Based on a Leeds United football chant, this BJM song features Will Carruthers on bass and backing vocals.

The opening track from Spacemen 3’s LP The Perfect Prescription, the best album of all time (no correspondence will be entered into).

A cover of a Mudhoney song, the plan was to issue this as a 7” on Sup-Pop with Mudhoney’s cover of Revolution on the flip. Once Spacemen 3 heard Mudhoney’s rather puerile version, things changed rapidly.

First released as a free 7” with Sniffin’ Rock fanzine and later included on some versions of Recurring, this song marked the last time that Spacemen 3 recorded as a whole band in the studio.

"I used the same sample AW used for Loaded which was an Italian bootleg of What I Am by Edie Brickell which I had on vinyl. I laid the Spacemen 3 I Love You sample over the top of it and added some extra bits and a vocal sample from an old soul CD I had, and so I Love Spacemen was born"

Balearic Jukebox’s Enzo tells me: “After going out to an A Love From Outer Space night in Brighton and being really inspired by Sean Johnston, AW’s partner who still puts on the nights, I set about making my first tune on Ableton.”

One of Jason’s later Spacemen 3 songs, this is really lovely. As with much of Jason’s side of Recurring, it was played live by early incarnations of Spiritualized, and is near the top of the list of songs I’d love Jason to suddenly remember about the next time he’s gigging.

Freelovebabies was the solo project of former Spacemen 3 bassist Will Carruthers, with assistance from many friends and musicians from the Midlands music scene. Both of their albums are well worth tracking down.

Philip was the main man in Perfect Disaster, friends and contemporaries of Spacemen 3, and who featured on the same bill on several occasions. Another member in their later years was a pre-Breeders Jo Wiggs.

It might look like I chose this song to follow Let Me Down Gently to reflect the fact that this is how they appear on Playing With Fire, but I didn’t notice that until after I’d put the playlist together. Coincidence!

The above video is the extended 12” version – I’ve opted to play the more concise one from the 7”.

How The Blues… was a two-volume set self-released by Pete in 2005. Amongst its many rarities is this unfinished song that would have formed a part of the album after Recurring. You can hear Pete giving instructions to the rest of the band from time to time.
