Excited about heat and building decarbonisation, working @regassistproj - heating & cooling / industrial electrification / district heating / heat planning
Taking a closer look at investments in industrial heat pumps, we find that taxes and levy reduction together with carbon pricing can significantly reduce payback periods, especially for very efficient heat pumps. Yet, structural reforms are needed to further reduce electricity prices.

Our analysis focusses on industrial electricity and #gas prices, aiming to reduce payback periods for investment in electrified process heat. We identify countries (EU and UK) with high potential and need for pricing reform.

Milestone: in June 2025 solar became the biggest source of electricity in Europe for the first time! 19.9%, 53.9TWh according to IEA.

Sunny news ☀️😎: peak solar capacity in NL on a clear winter day now matches what used to be peak summer capacity. Check out february 2025 and July 2020 ⏬

A positive note in times of doom and gloom on Europe's position in the clean tech race: heat pumps (small and large) are an enormous growth opportunity.

Great analysis by Daan Walter @RMI.

Europe's electricity production is becoming low carbon at impressive rates. We hit 47.4% renewables in 2024. Together with 23.7% nuclear this leaves only 28.9% fossil fuel based production 🎉

Next up: accelerate electrification of heat in buildings and industry make most of this clean electricity.

District heating in Europe faces a double challenge: accellerating expansion, while at the same time making it clean, efficient, and smart. How? The Nordics and Baltics are leading the way !

Let's get all countries with high DH potential on a pathway to the top right corner 🚀 😅

We talk a lot about decarbonising heating. Let's not forget about cooling 🧊. European countries cooling needs will surge in a 2C scenario vs. 1.5C; (sadly, again sub-saharan countries will suffer most).

Daily dose of positive news: EU power sector is decarbonising at astonishing rates

Reducing gas import dependency continues to be key in improving competitiveness and especially EU autonomy. How?:
1) accellerating electrification
2) expanding renewables
3) driving efficiency
4) implementing Fitfor55

Woah, as of 2023 Dutch gas demand is back to a level lower than... before the statistics started in 1984.

But, with production declining even faster (with Groningen field closure) import dependency is higher than ever.

Good news for the climate: internal-combustion car sales in China are in a free fall 🎢. EV sales went from 1.1m in 2019 to 8.1 in 2023, saving >20 Mt CO₂.

This fundamental shift is causing factories to be shutdown or repurposed for EV's, and has made China the leading auto exporting country.

Renewables are absolutely killing it 🚀, outpacing growth in fossil fuel use by 2-1 since 2019

But, energy efficiency improvements are lagging

The challenge for the coming years: ramping up electrification of our energy use, esp. in heat and transport

Because electrification = efficiency

Looking forward to speaking and listening at study day greendeal by the flemish RE and Cogen organisations today. Up first, Stefaan Vergote from the Commission.

Looking forward to a great day talking about #districtheating decarbonisation @DHCsummit. Commisioner Simson kicking it off with a strong call to action for member states: 'phase-out fossil fuel subsidies in heating and cooling'
