I love how 80s futurism couldn't conceive of other types of screens (at least in the near future), so everything still used CRTs. It's such a striking aesthetic contrast!

I've never seen one in person, either! Apparently only a handful have been made, and they were scored for by a few late romantic/modernist composers. I know Strauss, Wagner, and Stravinsky have written parts for them, but everybody just plays those excerpts on bass in B-flat.

Most of the time it's pretty obvious what's going on, because there will be a continuation of the register between clef changes, so it's not quite as bad as it sounds. But yeah, the historical cul-de-sacs for orchestral wind writing are many and varied!
