I’m excited to be invited to attend and participate in CARRA’s Annual Scientific Meeting to share my family’s journey and discuss the challenges of understanding young developing immune systems and immune dysregulation.

wisdom comes in many shapes and sizes. I’ve learned a lot from a lot of different people. I continue to learn the most from you, my son.

This study highlights the importance of a long-term multidisciplinary follow-up of children hospitalised with MIS-C, in order to detect the potential long-term sequelae in different areas of health

The number of Kawasaki Disease patients/month (both confirmed and unconfirmed) after the onset of the pandemic remained low, reflecting the reduced KD incidence during the pandemic. Additionally, the trends for both the confirmed and unconfirmed KD patients showed no seasonal variability.

A portion of the unconfirmed KD (who may have had exposure to COVID with or without documentation) and the unconfirmed MIS-C patients may have been patients who experienced a hyperinflammatory reaction that did not fully manifest as a confirmed case for either condition.

Why exclude KD patients with recent COVID infection from the study? This approach overlooks a critical subgroup—children who could offer additional insights into the spectrum of inflammatory responses in pediatric patients.

Bellos, Santillo, @SanchoShimizu et al. identify an enrichment of rare, damaging variants in BTNL8 in MIS-C patients resulting in impaired Vγ4⁺ γδ T cell engagement associated with altered gut homeostasis which may contribute to the pathogenesis of MIS-C. hubs.la/Q02Z9_kK0

I did want to ask about the phrasing, “most kids recover with medical care.” While it’s true that many children improve, data shows that 20-50% of children with MIS-C experience ongoing symptoms. Here are some linked studies.

“Antibiotic exposure has the powerful effect of skewing the composition of the intestinal microbiota, and we hypothesize that prior antibiotic exposure might be associated with increased severity of KD and the development of CALs due to aberrant changes in the intestinal microbiota of KD patients”

We should also recognize that children can experience long COVID, and it’s highly probable that MIS-C and long COVID exist on a spectrum of related conditions.
