The star of the show today was a Boreal Owl. It wasn't found by me, but I appreciated being able to capture it since it was on my list of wants for the trip. Also a lifer bird!

The Boreal Owl is a tiny species. They're brown and white striped on the belly, and the head is brown with white spots. It has a dark brown outline around its facial disc, with the top of that looking almost black. Like most owls, the eyes are golden in color.

ONE HUNDRED AND FIVE. One hundred and five suns had risen and fallen since Lyric drew her first breath.
And in five more years—ten, if the Great One was feeling particularly merciful—she would cease to exist.
Untethered. Unclaimed. Free.
But not today. Today, she was alive.

Text 2:
Ciarán blinked, his lips twitching into a faint smile. “Happy birthday? Wait… do dragons celebrate their birthday?”
Lyric chuffed, a plume of steam escaping her nostrils. “We do. It just involves fire and a lot of corpses in its wake.”
Ciarán’s face paled.
“Of sheep or cattle.” she added, a rare laugh rumbling in her chest.

“I will never understand your kind,” she muttered. “How the Great One created you all so fragile is beyond me.” She felt liquid dripping onto her back and twisted her neck to look behind her. “You’re leaking, Meat Sack.”
“Well, I’m not exactly a five-hundred-year-old dragon with skin that not even steel can penetrate,” He shot back, though his voice wavered.
“One hundred and five,” she corrected flatly.
“Excuse me?”
“One hundred and five, as of today that is. One hundred and five. My age.” she said, her tone curt. “I’m not that Old.”

What would you risk for a hundred years? Could you endure a bond that ties your soul to another, knowing that a single mistake could mean your death—and theirs? In the world of Aeridryn, dragons and humans are bound by the sacred vow of the Tithe, a bond forged to ensure balance and survival. But even the most sacred traditions have their rebels.

For centuries, this alliance has preserved the fragile balance of nature and power across the land.

But in the kingdom of Cerillia, not all dragons obey this tradition. Lyric, a defiant silver dragon marked by her family’s treachery, has spent her life on the outskirts of dragonkind. Branded as the daughter of traitors, she has sworn to live untethered, rejecting the Tithe’s promises—even if it means losing her future.

Ciarán Harwood, a desperate young man from a starving family, stumbles into Lyric’s path while hunting in forbidden woods. In his search for survival, he meets the most arrogant, self-serving, and irritable creature he could imagine—a dragon who makes it clear she doesn’t want or need his help. But when an ambush by mages threatens Lyric’s life, Ciarán makes a split-second decision to save her. Was it stupidity? Kindness? Or something else? Even Lyric doesn’t know.

Their chance encounter sets off a chain of events neither could have foreseen. Lyric and Ciarán are thrust into a world of political intrigue, societal prejudice, and an ancient, rising threat that could destroy everything they hold dear. Reluctant allies at best, they must learn to trust each other if they’re to survive—not just the forces determined to tear them apart, but now the strings of fate that ties them together.
