Now that the article about "fuck" is finished, I need to remove this post-it used to track the status of the project 😢 It has received weird looks by various office visitors...
August 15, 2025 at 2:05 PM
The article was automatically added to ResearchGate (being Open Access I guess), but it thinks we're citing a German article called "When did church organs find their introduction in Württemberg?"... I think it's been mixed up with out article about "fanden" (the devil), which isn't recognized.

I ended up having to define "interactional function" in the introduction. I think the term (or equivalents) are widespread, but has not really been discussed in this kind of detail as a linguistic function. I'd still like to think more about it, but here's a beginning!

Also, you may notice "fucking" as a clause adverbial is not on the list. BUT it exists, it's just not that frequent. I have one case of it in reported speech (counted as "quoted"). Not shown in the article, but since you're lucky, you can see it my recent article on zero copula clauses in Danish!

More constructions were collected than those studied in detail. I focused on those where I had cases enough to have an analysis of it, plus an analysis of the single case of "hva fuck" because of a reviewer 🤷 But I like to give an impression of the frequency, also why I include unanalyzable cases

In this paper, "syntax" is basically about the role of the construction, both as part of borrowing, but also swearing formula. I disinguish 5 interactional functions associated with specific turn format constructions - Interactional features mostly boil down to sequence as who speaks before/after 🐦🐦

The data is based on 76 cases from Danish everyday interactions. I went through a lot of data to gather them, but as is the case with swearing/borrowing, there is a lot of variation in use, as not everyone uses this kind of thing.

The analysis shows that "fuck" is not just one word that you may yell when you're in pain or annoyed, but does what it does together with the rest of the utterance. Those syntactic constructions are ofte common swearing formula, but also slightly related to the difference between "fuck" and "fucking

With "the intertwined nature of grammar" as the second part of the title, I try to reflect this. That part was inspired by this interaction I had with @rpuggaardrode.bsky.social! I have nine headings with the formulation "copula in X". This chapter has been through some stuff... 😅

The Danish copula and its variation in pronunciation is the topic of my chapter in "Grammar in Action". #Danish copulas may be reduced to the point of not being there, and I show that they can be used for assessments. The adjective marks it enough as an assessment; may be part of why it's reduced 🐦🐦

The book has supposedly been out for a MONTH, but I only received my physical copy yesterday (and the PDF a week ago...)

Bonus: An abstract in German! And the fact that it's open access 🔓🎉 www.gespraechsforschung-online.de/en/2025.html

When used for word search, "hva fanden" indicates that it's unlikely that the speaker is going to retrieve the word or expression sought for. The case of other-initiated repair happens to be about a referent that was assessed negatively earlier in the conversation, in line with request for info-use

"Hva fanden" ('what the devil') is a #Danish swearing expression used as part of word search, other-initiated repair, genuine requests for information with a display of stance, but also frequently used in reported speech, as part of assessing 🐦🐦 www.gespraechsforschung-online.de/fileadmin/da...

This weekend I went to #Sprogense, a "language festival" in the town Bogense where the #Danish Language Council is situated. So I went by tent, as proper festivals require. Also, I came 2nd place in Funen dialect quiz somehow!

They didn't need to list me multiple times, but I won't complain about the attention 😅 🐦🐦

If you like copulas, reduction phenomena or assessments, my chapter trying to handle this is number 10! benjamins.com/catalog/slsi... #linguistics

Sometimes I remember that people who see my article status tracking system may not know that the post-it saying "fuck" exists because of my article on the word

This attempt at "cleaning" the finger away from a scanned page has an awful, pixelated result 😵 #books
