We hadn't either! He looks like a big domestic cat kneading. I've since read up and they have scent glands in their "wrists", so he probably is marking. It's a new wallow, so perhaps it needs his scent adding to the new location!

Fascinating! I recognized the image. This animal grabbed my attention when I visited the museum in 2019 (I had no idea this species had existed), and I liked its placement alongside the Red Fox, for a bit of comparative anatomy. Thanks for sharing more information about this specimen - and species.

A great picnic overall. Three species of vulture while we ate, plus a parlour trick! (Thanks to Bob Mortimer on Would I Lie to You for the inspiration and apple-splitting "tutorial"...).
