Anything by Patricia Polacco, including Mrs. Katz and Tush. Something about the painterly style, the muted colors giving even modern stories an age-old feeling, the fullness of the characters’ faces bringing out their emotions… I remember feeling sort of haunted at the same time as loving it.

I love this question. Can’t pick an absolute favorite, but here’s one I’m very fond of that wound up in my book, Enigma and Other Aromantic Asexual Love Poems:

“Friend Lior,” says Paz, “may I hug you?” I blink at her. “Uh. I guess? If you want to?” “Do you want me to?” It suddenly hits me just how long it’s been since I was hugged. The last time I hugged anyone was when I hugged my children goodnight, the night before I was taken away. “…yeah.” She reaches her broad arms out and wraps them around me, and my body instinctually leans into her embrace. And it’s not like I haven’t shed more than enough water already today, but somehow – somehow – I start crying all over again. I hate that I’m crying. I hate that they’re all watching me cry. But I don’t hate the hug.

“Good Shabbos,” I say to myself. Is it Shabbat? Savta never observed it. She told us when it was Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur, and I carved a tally mark in the floor under my cot every year. That’s how I know it’s been twelve years since my parents sent me to Savta’s Court. I’ve never been good at using the stars or the phases of the moon to tell the date. It must not be Shabbat quite yet, since the delivery person is working. Once the sun sets, then it will be Shabbat. All around me is empty land, marked only by the rough road and the signpost, the distant forest and mountains providing borders to the world. What kind of rest could I find out here? When was the last time I truly rested? I watch the cart shrink into the distance, and I try to remember. A room of my own. A comfortable bed. Regular meals. My mother frowning at me. My teachers rapping my knuckles. My father shoving me into the carriage.

I mean, I’ve been attracted to plenty of sexy but ultimately unimportant people. That would explain it, though, right? If you’ve never been romantically attracted to someone, then you wouldn’t know what it’s like to think they’re that important.” “That is not true,” I say. “I, too, do not experience romantic attraction. But I know what it is to see certain people as more important, and even most important. Certain people have been more important to me than others; I have prioritized their well-being over others. My love for them was not romantic, but it was important.” “Different attractions are different,” says Shiri, “not more or less important. And different people are different, not more or less important.”

With Andor Season 2 just a week away, my girlfriend and I put our heads together and made a predictions bingo card.

Frankly I will be very surprised if we got any of this right. We’re excited regardless!!
