As I’m concerned that the figures in the SI might get too little attention, here are some findings in visual form:
Two side-by-side plots showing how the immigrant penalty in applying JCL varies by (a) type of crime (the largest penalties appear for minor offenses such as theft or insults, smaller for serious crimes like murder or robbery). (b) previous convictions (the penalty is strongest for offenders with no previous convictions and remains significant, though smaller, for those with multiple prior convictions). Scatterplot showing the relationship between the “immigrant penalty in the application of juvenile criminal law (JCL)” and the 2017 AfD vote share across German judicial districts. As AfD vote share increases, the immigrant penalty becomes larger (more negative; r=-0.45). plot showing judicial bias against immigrants from the Middle East and Africa between 2009 and 2018. The y-axis shows the difference in the probability of being sentenced under juvenile law compared to natives. The bias widens notably in 2014/2015, coinciding with an increase in the number of refugees from these regions (shown as grey bars in the bottom).

A theoretical framework for analyzing family life courses. Figure 1 re-organizes and extends core principles of the life course paradigm by specifying (1) possible interacting relationships between predictors and (2) family life course outcomes on different levels of analysis. We distinguish the macro, meso, and micro levels, which broadly resonate with the core principles of time and place, linked lives, and agency in Elder et al. (2003) and the dimension of “levels” in the life course cube (Bernardi et al., 2019).
