Climate change is our greatest risk? 🤔

Climate change is not a risk, it’s an issue - one that engulfs every other risk we know how to measure.

#overshoot #collapse
AXA and Ipsos have published the 12th edition of the Future Risks Report, a report based on a global survey of 23,000 citizens and 3,595 risk experts.
What do both experts and citizens rank as greates risk?
*** Climate change ***
So do I, after over 35 years experience in climate science.

Collapse is already here. Extinction is the baseline, not the outlier. The only real question is whether humans remain a keystone of collapse, or find ways to stabilise life as we go down. My new essay: Keystone Humanity

800 individual days have been at least 1.5C above the Pre-Industrial baseline

Summer 2025 was largely under 1.5C

> Will we pass 900 days in 2026?
> Will we pass 1000 days by 2027?
> Will the Loess 30-yr trend pass 1.5C before 2028?

The Red Queen tells Alice she must run as fast as she can just to stay in the same place.

Biologists use the Red Queen hypothesis to describe co-evolution: predator and prey, parasite and host, locked in a race where standing still means falling behind - and more rapid extinction. 1/4 #collapse

In case you missed it:

"Focusing anger on villains can feel righteous, but it keeps us tethered to the illusion that collapse is a matter of bad actors.

But the flaw is not in the individuals. It is in the structure of civilisation itself."

We don’t replace energy sources, we stack them.

Wood → coal → oil → gas → renewables.

Each new source adds to the total flow.

The “displaced” fossil fuels don’t stay in the ground - they’re burned elsewhere (Jevons paradox). That’s why growth keeps driving emissions higher..

#overshoot #collapse
Exciting clean energy breakthrough if you missed it: Finland launches world's largest sand battery in Pornainen! 13m tall, stores 100 MWh of renewable power as heat in sand at 450°C for weeks. Heats homes/offices/schools, cuts CO2 by 70% vs old woodchip plant.

This is truly calamitous⬇️
A new World Bank report cites data from a forthcoming study: it shows the biomass of wild terrestrial mammals as being 2% of all mammals on earth.
A widely quoted 2018 study had shown that proportion as 4% (see next post).
The rest is us & our livestock.

New podcast episode!

To live in the world but to see beyond the world creates pressure in the mind. In some circles, it's called "cognitive dissonance." In our circle, we call it "collapse awareness." When the pressure is too great, we must leave the fake world to find a reality that we recognize.

Jan.

Renewables don’t replace ecosystems, soils, or minerals already consumed. They slow the bleed, but they don’t change the fact that civilisation is organised around perpetual growth on a finite planet.

Solar isn’t the myth. The myth is that it can save human civilisation.

#overshoot #collapse
There’s a persistent myth that new solar farms don’t really help tackle climate change because panels are “made with coal” and “never pay back” their carbon debt.

This is simply false.

- UN: solar ~8x cleaner than gas, ~19x than coal per kWh
- panels repay CO2 in 4 months; save 57x over life

Are we in ecological overshoot? Yes.

Can civilisation be made sustainable on its resource base? No.

Can we support biodiversity on the way down? Locally, yes.

Will this be the first civilisation not to collapse? No.
