Built in 1917, Haifa School in Khan Younis, the oldest school in the Gaza Strip, now lies in ruins after being destroyed by Israeli missiles during the genocide.
A heavily damaged stone building, once part of Haifa School, stands with its upper floors collapsed and large slabs of concrete hanging downward. Twisted metal beams are piled in front of the structure, and a mound of dirt rises beside the ruins. Windows and doorways are blown open or blocked by debris. The multi-story classroom block has gaping holes where walls once stood. Makeshift tarps and blankets hang in window openings. Donald Trump announced earlier this month that all American officials will boycott the G20 summit taking place November 22–23 in Johannesburg, South Africa, where leaders and representatives from 42 of the world’s wealthiest and most powerful countries are gathering. The United States, which is scheduled to take over the G20’s rotating presidency after South Africa’s term ends, has based the boycott on the widely debunked accusation of South African state-backed persecution of white Afrikaners in the former apartheid state. Ahead of the meeting, UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that exploding military budgets are worsening global crises and urged G20 leaders to act: “Conflicts, climate chaos, economic uncertainty, mounting debt, inequality, and the collapse in global aid are inflicting massive suffering… and rising military expenditure is drawing resources away from development… Over the next two days I will call on G20 members to use their leverage to lead the action we need.” The United States is, by far, the world’s largest military spender, and Congress has already advanced record-breaking 2026 NDAA bills – $925 billion in the Senate and $883 billion in the House – with a final version expected this week.
