Spent most of this year working on a new thing to revive my old blog, and I finally started publishing it today: I'm going to watch over 1,000 movie musicals, in chronological order.
Starting Today: 100(+) Years of Movie Musicals
Back in January, I was catching up on the final year of the Musicalsplaining podcast, when a thought entered my head. “There are so many movie musicals I haven’t gotten around to yet&#8…

I'm at least halfway through point-and-click adventure The Drifter. A bit gruesome, and some of the solutions have been a little specific and obtuse - particularly when there are time limits - but I'm enjoying it.

Tonight's film features a child star trying to move into adult roles, by playing a child star who wants to move into adult roles.

Johnny Doughboy (1942)
Much like Deanna Durbin and Judy Garland, Jane Withers was a 1930s child star trying to navigate the transition into more adult roles in the early '40s, and the film Johnny Doughboy (dir. John H. Auer) addresses this directly. Withers plays child actress Ann Winters, now sixteen and tired of being cast in the child roles her manager, Harry Fabian (William Demarest), insists she play (her latest offer, she is assured, has her playing 12 instead of 10).

Happy to hear they're doing a new Stargate series, but I worry it's just not possible to do what old shows like that did in an era where you only get 8-10 episodes a season.

Today's film may not be set in Latin America, but it's still another generic Fox musical with the same formula.

Springtime in the Rockies (1942)
Springtime in the Rockies (1942)
I think I've said before that the Fox musicals are getting repetitive, but I'm really starting to feel it now. Springtime in the Rockies (dir. Irving Cummings) is set in the Canadian Rockies rather than Latin America, but it's still doing a lot of the same things. Broadway star Vicky Lane (Betty Grable) leaves her stage partner Dan Christy (John Payne) when she gets tired of his cheating.

Can we go back to the days when a movie would interrupt its plot for a solid four minutes of this insanity. You think you've seen it all then it just keeps getting wilder.

"Illegal migration tearing UK apart"
The trick of course is that it's not the immigration itself, it's the arttitudes toward it and the actions of right-wing agitators. But they're going to continue pretending that cracking down on migration will fix things when it just adds more fuel to the fire.
Illegal migration tearing UK apart, Mahmood says
The home secretary is set to announce major policy reforms, including a 20-year wait before people granted asylum can apply to settle permanently.

Now that I'm done with Hollow Knight, trying to take a chunk out of my wishlist. Played Strange Jigsaws, an interesting and weird puzzle game, and Desvelado, a cute puzzle platformer that made my thumbs hurt.

BBC articles about trans women in changing rooms continue to be blatantly biased. This one keeps up the trend of refusing to use any pronouns for the woman in question, even quite noticably only using her first name so they avoid calling her "Ms" (which they used for all the cis women mentioned).

Last night I watched Lady of Burlesque, a film adaptation of the novel The G-String Murders by Gypsy Rose Lee. I actually jumped back a bit in my timeline to watch it because I thought I'd missed it by mistake when I did 1943.

Noticed Firefox had quietly added some AI stuff in my browser. Was easy enough to turn off, though.
