Wow, Alex – what a terrific review. You really do the author justice. It’s refreshing to read such serious engagement.

“But, surely, if we just sacrifice THIS ONE marginalized group, the fascists will be satisfied & we can live in peace!”

What shatters me is the absolute lack of urgency: the most vulnerable in our society will continue to suffer unremittingly while shiny new baubles are dangled before those with cash to spend… no urgency for safety, no urgency for accessibility, no urgency for basic community care.

We already know, via actually-existing AI's predating *electricity*: bureaucracies and corporations allow people to carry out absolutely amoral decisions with absolutely no sense of blame or responsibility for the outcome.

Yes. Selling derived insights tho is the sweet spot: “people who buy Peet’s coffee also tend to buy maple syrup” could generate a sales lead

Love the defense! “he VOTED the way you want, he just failed to whip votes in his own caucus, which ignored him” is not the ringing endorsement you think it is

I mean… Costco is *also* in the business of building detailed customer profiles, requiring membership card scans to enter the store & recording every item purchased, associated with your Visa card, home address, date of birth, and phone number. Surely they monetize & sell derivatives of that data?

I remember attending a meeting with five members of the ACOG Board in 2003 to pitch them a software product. I was dismayed that all five of the ACOG Board were older white men! This looks like progress. Congratulations, Dr. Clare!

Oh absolutely! It’s just that I was looking at drawings and doing community engagement five years ago. And more.

I take it this means we won’t see a pedestrianized Bow Street anytime soon?

I worked in Winthrop at a nonprofit community org from 1989-1995. It was insular and xenophobic and white. Today, it’s the same but older - a hotbed of “thin blue line” flags and Trump signs.

Someone is obviously trying to distract from your epic appearance in the NY Times crossword puzzle this weekend!

Like, two months ago they said they “would not touch” the existing building. Then they demolished the whole thing. Do you honestly believe they did a full geotechnical analysis & got Pentagon professional staff approval?

Wait— are you implying that there’s some global conservation of em dashes? That an em dash can neither be created nor destroyed?!
