More pictures from a chilly Athelney yesterday. The wagtails and egrets were loving the digging. It looks brutal but actually it’s really only small part of the site…. The rest is just changing slowly as it will www.somersetwildlands.org

Early morning start to dig some
modest scrapes in two fields at Athelney. It might seem from our recent posts that we do loads of digging and planting, but actually this is pretty much the first thing we’ve done like this here. After this it’s back to its own thing!

Thanks to the volunteers who came to our second round of memorial tree planting at Clark Fields today. We had a wonderful morning. That’s us done for now, we’ll let the rest develop by itself. To find out more about our work and this site go to: www.somersetwildlands.org/our-land/eas...

We’ll be doing another small round of tree planting in a couple of months, and we’ll be asking members if they’d like to get involved.

“How do I become a member?” we hear you all cry. Just sign up from as little as £5 a month and help rewild the Somerset Levels. www.somersetwildlands.org/support

Planting a memorial grove.

We don’t do much planting, but in this case we were very happy to. Here is Kate from Reimagining the Levels who provided the trees and equipment showing how it’s done.

We all need hope, and to believe the future can be better than the past, and we really believe that rewilding can play a role in that.

We can’t go back in time, but we can create a wilder, better, future for everyone

Message to say hello from our newest site where we will be doing a little memorial tree planting at the weekend. We don’t do tree planting as a rule - we tend to let nature do its thing - but in this case we are happy to! www.somersetwildlands.org

Little bit of Autumn colour on our newest Clark Fields site. This land is only a few months into its rewilding journey. It’s amazing to think how it might change and evolve in the decades to come. Help us build a better, wilder future, and go to www.Somersetwildlands.org

Some people are talking about fracking again. This was pushed for over ten years, and didn't work and was hugely unpopular. These are the fracking license areas formerly offered in our region of Somerset. Needless to say we would oppose any fracking on or near our land, or in the Levels area.

Was down pulling out some Himalayan Balsam, changing camera traps and so on. Site looking really nice - deer, cormorants, egret, heron, kestrels, skylarks etc all much in evidence. Swallows all hanging on the wires keeping cool. Somersetwildlands.org

Hello from a hot and steaming Athelney - birds are quiet today but the grasshoppers are loud. Loads of vetch, meadowsweet, woundwort, loosestrife, marsh ragwort, watermint etc willow, hawthorn and blackthorn all coming through strongly in places. www.somersetwildlands.org

Foxes, otters, badgers, deer. A few clips from one of our camera traps at Athelney, taken over a couple of weeks. Nothing earth-shattering, but lovely to see. To find out more about our work making space for nature or to join as a member, go to www.somersetwildlands.org
