If I had to capture the essence of “rightwing populism” I think I would cite the time in 1774 Virginia slaveowner Richard Henry Lee wanted to protest new taxes levied by the British so he forced his slaves to protest the tax hike on his behalf with banners denouncing the taxes as "chains of slavery"
The American Patriots sought to protect both liberty and property, which they understood as interdependent. But the property of the colonists included thousands of people held as perpetual slaves deprived of their own liberty. In Virginia, a leading Patriot, Richard Henry Lee, staged a protest by parading his slaves around a courthouse while carrying banners that denounced Parliament's taxes as “chains of slavery." Masters like Lee and Tucker had a very weak sense of irony. Colonel Tucker might have seen greater marks of slavery had he looked at his own slaves.?
