An almost surreal video from Istanbul - watch until the very end.

Police harshly attack protestors with plastic bullets and pepper gas.

Suddenly, Ankaranin Baglari starts playing in the background. And then two attacked protestors start dancing oyun havası.

Resisting with style!

Dearest Turkey, you deserve much better. I hope you achieve it sooner or later.

If you still have doubts about what’s right or wrong, or what’s fair or unfair in Turkey at this critical moment.

Public transportation in parts of Istanbul are halted.

Any public gathering is banned for 4 days in the city

The government cut access to socal media, even on WhatsApp reportedly videos & photos are not sent.

Aim is to head off mass protests and appoint an unelected trustee as Istanbul mayor.
This should be the last straw for the Turkish opposition. Unless there are mass protests, which the government is trying to prevent at all costs, Turkey is now very much a closed autocracy. www.nytimes.com/2025/03/19/w...

The detention of Istanbul’s mayor, Ekrem #imamoğlu is deeply frustrating. Just when Turkey and the EU should be working together, and when there are openings for peace on the Kurdish issue, some choose to shut those windows of hope.

Reading today’s news, I’m reminded of a powerful message from a meeting organised by @euiss.bsky.social I attended recently: talking about the reconstruction of #Gaza is premature (at best). Our priority must be stopping the destruction. Let’s not fool ourselves.
Gaza, West Bank, Lebanon & Syria: The #MENA region remains in turmoil, with each country facing unique challenges. Yesterday, we gathered experts to explore how the EU can bolster stabilisation, support reconstruction & enhance humanitarian efforts. Thanks to all participants!

I teach my IR students that a global power is expected to have stakes and influence worldwide. If absent on a major global issue, this could indicate either a lack of capability or a lack of willingness to act as one. The last part of Trump's tweet could spark an interesting discussion, isn't it?

-facilitated jihadists to Iraq
-forcibly displaced ~50% of Syrians to Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan, Iraq, Europe
-fuelled the rise of ISIS
-enabled Iran to extend its axis
-enabled Russia to extend its malign influence
