A still from AMC’s the Terror where Captain James Fitzjames (who is admittedly looking kinda rough. Probably all the scurvy and lead poisoning) has fallen to his knees in the midst of march across King William Island. He is looking up at Captain Francis Crozier, who is helping him to his feet. Other men from the crew of the Franklin Expedition in various Victorian era uniforms of the British Navy circa 1845 can be seen around them but are cut off from the shoulders up so you can see exactly which of the million white men with sideburns in this show they are. In the lower left hand corner is an inserted screenshot of a post by tumblr user “standingcowrrdly” which says: “do my dark circles and deteriorating health make me look hot?”

It’s not finished, but I got it finished enough to wear on stage to present Hall awards and that’s pretty impressive for getting my fabric 7 days ago.
I still need to hem the robe correctly and do some tacks to make things sit right, and I want to bind the seams inside the tunic. So to be continued!
The Elrond costume mentioned in the post on a mannequin. It is comprised of a rust colored silk robe with gold toned brocade lining revealed on the turned back sleeves. Underneath is a beige silk tunic with a high collar, a buttoned yoke with silver embroidered details, and tied with a red silk sash. Now that I’m home and have taken a 4 hour nap, here are a few more construction photos for Elrond!
I got too busy to document progress well, but this shows the pattern I drafted. It’s a houppelande, so basically it’s a triangle from the armpits down, but I am proud of figuring out the HUGE sleeves.

Case in point, one of the main details I’ll be omitting is the burnouts on the sleeves and back of the robe. I have the type of velvet required to do them eventually (silk backing with rayon pile, thanks Sy Fabrics lol), but I can’t get the fiber etch anywhere that would deliver in time. So later.

I just spent a full day couching down silver thread onto the yoke of the tunic, which is far and away was always going to be the most time consuming part of making this outfit, so now that it’s finished I think by some miracle I am actually going to finish Elrond before San Japan.

A long haired silver tabby Siberian Forest cat being incredibly helpful in the patterning process by laying across the fabric in a very unbothered manner. My Witcher 3 Dandelion doublet has been sitting in my UFO pile since *LAST* San Japan and I finally got the sleeves on this mofo, and I am happy to report that even after looking at it for over a year, the color scheme is still just as obnoxious.

I discovered that the beads on the little ear locks are essential to keeping the square knots tidy, as they need the weight pulling down to keep them from distorting (explains why when I would tie them in my hair as kid it would never work lmfao)

Ps, the circlet is kinda helter skelter, but only because I didn’t really pin it on well or precisely, I just wanted confirmation it would work. Still working on the charms for the back of the hair.

Alright, starting the Elrond build thread in earnest.
Today, for the first time ever, I’m adding male pattern baldness to a wig. 🤣

I will say, though Smeatloaf does have a distinctive medieval cat appearance and I joke about her being a scrungy, scruffy baby:
The comparison between her as a pampered housecat of 9 months age vs a dirty crusty stray w/ scabies 6 months ago?
Night and day.
A tortie seal point mostly white snowshoe cat with large, slightly crossed blue eyes seated on a brown-toned jacquard couch cushion. Behind her in the background you can see the back of the dark oak wood and brown and gold lattice patterned chenille Victorian couch the cushions belong to, as well as a white wall with a few pictures hanging on it. The cat is looking at the camera attentively with a pleasant expression. She is sitting calmly on her tummy with her paws in front of her and tail wrapped around her (loaf style). She has very large ears and a large pink nose which lend her a fairly comical appearance. The same kitten when she was 3 months old, and much smaller. Her face is noticeably dirty, her eyes are crusty, and she looks sad and scared. You can see she is in a metal kennel of some sort, there is a steel bin behind her, and a pink blanket beneath her. The most notable difference between this photo and the photo of her six months later is the condition of her coat, which in this photo has a scruffy, moth-eaten appearance.

Also The Right Honorable Baroness Scruffy von Smeatloaf continues to exhibit why she is the Lady of the Scrungy.
The fluffy silver tabby kitten, Ruth, is asleep on the blue chair and knit blanket still, but her sister, Smeatloaf, is now awake, sitting up slightly but still half lounging on top of Ruth, and her blue crossed eyes are barely open and very much unfocused. In this photo, Smeatloaf is posed exactly the same as before except she has lifted her chin slightly and looks almost smug to be lounging in this manner. In the final photo (all of which have been taken in such rapid succession that Ruth has not even moved), Smeatloaf is yawning, her mouth open so wide she looks like she could give the screaming cowboy in Big Enough by Kirin J Callinan a run for his money.
