1 in 6 girls and 1 in 9 boys will experience physical or sexual abuse before the age of 15 (AIHW 2019). Kids need accessible outlets for disclosure and information.

Social media acts as a tool for disclosure and empowerment for survivors of violence, especially for generations who grew up online. While online harm does exist, it’s also harmful to remove kids from important communication outlets that they know how.

When news media reduces violence against women to dramatic and disrespectful headlines, it harms the wider community by putting an asterisk on these women, as if their murders were more interesting than their lives. It places value and judgment on our every action and decision.

Too often, “news” rely on sensationalism, dehumanisation, and victim-blaming that overshadows perpetrator violence. “Wheelie bin murder” is pulled straight from multiple 2024 articles and all the way back to 2006 (that I could find). That’s 18 years of dead women being referred to as wheelie bins.

Gender based violence often includes violence against kids (see the national plan on violence against women and children), but yeah - fuck violent people and violence against kids.
