Rather than treating diversity as a token gesture or an annual event, we need advocates and organisations to create space for diverse voices. People with intersectional identities are at more risk of violence and our collective advocacy needs to represent that.

A woman was killed every two days in November. Between November 1st and 30th, 18 women were murdered or had their violent deaths reported. That’s one woman every two days - twice the reported national average.

The count currently stands at 92 women lost to violence in 2024.

1 in 6 girls and 1 in 9 boys will experience physical or sexual abuse before the age of 15 (AIHW 2019). Kids need accessible outlets for disclosure and information.

Social media acts as a tool for disclosure and empowerment for survivors of violence, especially for generations who grew up online. While online harm does exist, it’s also harmful to remove kids from important communication outlets that they know how.

This morning, the social media ban for kids under 16 passed the Senate. For a government who says they care about violence prevention and child safety, they’ve just passed a bill that will remove a potential lifeline for kids impacted by domestic, family and sexual violence.

We must demand coverage that centres survivors and highlights the systemic issues that perpetuate violence.

International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, or Day 1 of 16 Days of Activism, is as good as any other day for us to call for a fundamental shift in the way media reports on violence, particularly when it comes to abused, missing and murdered women.

It’s easy to scroll, click and like without a second thought. But by seeking diverse perspectives and engaging with information intentionally, we reclaim our agency in conversation, challenge bias, and create informed change.

Let’s become more than spectators. Think, ask and engage purposefully! 🫶

#GiselePelicot shouldn’t have felt obligated to share her trauma to start a conversation. No survivor should. We need global social change to see perpetrators as the monsters they are. Men need to hold others accountable - it’s the bare minimum.

Women shouldn’t have to demand safety in 2024.

Infowars: Run by Alex Jones until a judge told him to pay over US$1.5 billion to Sandy Hook victim families, after calling the school shooting a hoax. Now, it’s been won at a bankruptcy auction by The Onion, partnered with a gun violence prevention organisation. We love this petty kind of activism.

Sir Lady Java: I couldn’t find any mainstream outlets who covered this. Java was a fierce activist and entertainer, and fought against discrimination laws in the 1960s. She was a trailblazer for trans rights and representation in media, and she deserves recognition for her advocacy.

NSW nurse strike: Is it radical to say that nurses deserve increased wages? Nurses in NSW are the lowest paid in Australia, and with NSW cops getting a pay rise of up to 39% - I’d be pissed off too. This is a clear indication that the government needs to prioritise healthcare and emergency services.

Lidia Thorpe: This censure is different to others, because there’s already bias against Lidia and her activism in parliament. Even when playing by coloniser rules, Indigenous people aren’t equal or valued - so why play house rules when you’re condemned for every action you do and reaction you have?

Alan Jones: This is the same guy who said we “need stolen generations” back in 2016 to protect kids from parents who suffer from addiction. These are the words of a bigoted paedophile. His abuse only highlights how our society allows those with influence and privilege to evade any consequence.
