If war in Iran produces a 1973 type shock, the whole world will suffer for it, and the whole world will blame us and hold us accountable even if we don't hold ourselves accountable. That will live with us long after Trump is gone. Talk of propaganda won't buy forgiveness either. That won't sell.

There is nothing you can do besides voting, and a lot people won't even do that.

We're going to be rebuilding from the ashes. There really is no avoiding that now. And understand, the rest of the world isn't going to be swayed with excuses.

I do have a darker view of things than say Tom. Jonathan V. Last is closer to my point of view.

I think the hot stove theory is the solution. Like rich kids, people aren't going to know what they had until it's completely lost. Then and only then can they be reasoned with.

The only amount of care I can find in most people is the culture war. I'll give you they care about that so perhaps that isn't nihilism in the strictest sense of the word. They just don't care about anything other than the culture war. The country can burn if it hurts transgenders.

People just don't care.

They aren't mindless animals. They have agency, and they are making a choice.

At least in Idiocracy they were trying to solve the problem of the plants. They were discussing it. They were just too stupid to solve it. We just don't care.

Fascist have to burn books. We aren't going to read them anyway.

Nihilism seems more of an apt description of what is occurring although I give you that consumerism and so forth is the build up to it.

Everything is hollow. Like supporting our troops. How many people say that or wear their little freedom shirt on July 4th.

Lebanon could be preemptively attacked by Israel.

You also think countries like Lebanon are homogeneous. You can find Christians there that don't like Iran, but Hezbollah is still the dominate armed force.

The middle east isn't homogeneously against Iran. It's a mixed bag.

They will have a rally around the flag effect. A blind man can see that coming.

Also hope everyone is prepared for what happens if a regional war does manifest into 1973 style oil shocks. We're a ship sinking in debt without that.
February 20, 2026 at 3:21 AM
History isn't kind to a regime change by air strategy. In addition, you can't trust Israel not to escalate everything into a regional war regardless of what Iran does.
February 20, 2026 at 3:19 AM
But to underline your point, you wouldn't know by the national conversation that we're merely six years away from hard cuts into social security. Interest payments are at 1 trillion per year. When the boomers start crying, remind them they knew how to spend their money better than gov.

Guessing you dared say something about Led Zeppelin.
February 20, 2026 at 3:09 AM
I'm curious if anyone wants to wager that Israel will escalate this into a regional war given an inch of rope.

So regardless if Iran orders them or not, war is probably coming for them.
February 20, 2026 at 2:00 AM
I think Israel will be the spearhead of the regional war regardless of what Iran does because they are going to attack different places to leverage this opportunity. Think the US will lose control of narrative if it plans more limited strikes.
February 20, 2026 at 1:59 AM
I think Israel escalates in a way that reduces the escalation chain where a regional war starts happening because it is going to see this as a once in a lifetime opportunity. This is regardless of what Trump has in mind.
February 20, 2026 at 1:49 AM
Trump will lose control very quickly imo.
February 20, 2026 at 1:30 AM
Something else I bet team Trump isn't considering is how quickly Israel will escalate the situation. They'll see this as a once in a lifetime opportunity to suck the US into a mess.
February 20, 2026 at 1:29 AM
I wasn't directing that at you.

There is a certain detachment from care in this country that I loath to no end.
