Thinking about Balan and his clones and how he uses them to bother Lance (the context is they’re supposed to be having a cleaning day but Balan Doesn’t Want To)
How Balan still assumes Lance can't pick him apart from his clones is one of Wonderworld's many enduring mysteries, especially when he considers just how many times they've been used for play rather than work. The telling apart is easy once one knows where to look; in the personality, mostly: the clones greet him with a gentle, wordless smile and then hurry off to the main stage. The clones are hard workers. Balan is, too, of course, but Lance knows that even in the midst of work, Balan will make time to talk with him, or joke with him, or slip behind the stage's curtains, just waiting to jump out... Most often, he takes it as a point of pride, how even after so many centuries, he’s remained the sole witness to the more… youthful aspects of Balan’s personality— because Balan liked him, trusted him enough to let down the carefully-constructed, rarely-shed persona that came with being maestro. Today, though, when he marches upstairs, guiding along someone who was clearly not Balan, only to find the real maestro lounging about carelessly among his Tims, that pride was certainly tested.

Finally more of the 3rd fic (Reala’s section at least because I haven’t done anything for NiGHTS’)… Jackle takes his new bestie Reala out for an adventure with Clawz and it’s cold, idk where I’m going with it because I never wrote an outline for this fic :’)
“…And where are we going?” Cold and bright and only becoming more so with every step further out of Nightmare, they marched on, Clawz taking the lead, his paw-steps melting a path in the snow for them to follow, while Reala found himself at the very end of the line, struggling to keep up with Jackle’s gait, longing for the warmth and dark and dust of home. "S'for him to decide." Jackle was by far the least bothered, warm in his cape and gloves— how easy. Reala grumbled to himself at the thought, rubbing at numb, cold skin. "Clawz'll know when we've got something." Clawz, at this point standing a good head over Reala, had no problem with the deepening snow— Reala had watched him, over the course of their journey, slowly shift upwards from the quick, four-legged dash he'd set out with, now attempting to keep up his former pace with an awkward loping movement, letting the warmth from his forepaws clear the way in front of him.

a piece of a Thang i’m working on 🤭🍝
It had been a lot to take on, initially, but the patrons were easy on you, raving over even the simplest of dishes— the restaurant’s menu hardly matched its extravagent decor, filled with the likes of omelettes, sandwiches, anything that could be made with just a few ingredients and minimal preparation. And at least you weren’t working alone, either: your sole coworker was quite the companion, electing to take on just as many responsibilities as had been shouldered onto you only for the fun he found in them. Speaking of… the sound of the dining room's door opening draws you out of the kitchen just in time to see Balan switch outfits— a sight you know you'll be seeing plenty of today, as always— from his usual white suit to an equally flashy maitre d' outfit, complete with a top hat now in elegant black-and-white.

Every single difference seemed to lie in him,instead. They were far from the first change he had noticed, but now out of the dark, laid flat on the table, his full attention fixed itself on what had happened to his hands: gone from around his wrists were the usual crimson ruffles of his suit, replaced by smooth, plum-colored cuffs lined and swirled with tarnished gold. A bit plain for my tastes, but… “Lance?” Slipping off a glove, he examined the skin on his hand beneath it— pale as could be with not a trace left of the deep-purple hue of the negativity’s spread, though his fingernails were left something closer to claws, ending in thin, sharp points. Well, nothing that can’t be changed, so long as the negativity is— “Lance!” Hair— definitely not the teal locs he longed to see again, but not the writhing mass of tendrils he recalled from before, either— fell far past where it usually sat just below his shoulders, a silver-white cascade of strands twisted into knots by a long sleep and heavy with oil. His eyes had shifted from bright gold to a soft blue, outlined with lavender markings that now formed a single teardrop rather than the sharp, playful stripes that had covered his eyes before. The rest of the suit, like the cuffs before it, was sorely lacking the extravagance of its predecessor: plain white with only the rarest touches of purple and red, gold trim criss-crossing his new, heavier frame. Shifting uncomfortably in his new shoes, he could feel that their raised heels had thinned out to the point they were nearly mere pegs, and even so, he was still standing quite a few inches shorter than before.

trying writing in second-person POV for the first time in a long time + balan being sad 😃🎉
it’s futile, you know it, like trying to follow footprints left behind as the snow melts and melts around you, but still you try, you sit at the piano and play the songs he did, you rummage through the jewelry box and trade your usual golden studs for the weighty, elegant pieces he always wore despite the way they tug downwards at your ears. anything that, in your mind, will help you understand who he was and what he felt and why things fell into place the way they had. the rest of your cast pities you, quite openly, regarding you in the same way you suspect lance himself would have if he were to see you in such a state: as if you were nothing more than a lost, confused child, with tender looks and mutters of “you poor little thing…” but there is little else to be done, when they find you sitting on the stairs wrapped in the cloak he left behind they can offer condolences and nothing more. wonderworld never closed off the room in the basement and, staring down into the darkness from where you sit, you realize you don’t wonder why.

finally we are writing and getting this switched from jackle’s POV to reala’s. reala is faced with A Choice 🤔
Reala scoffed. “It can’t be that simple.” “Can’t it? All the Ideya we collect end up at the same place in the end, who gets them there and how they get there aren’t too important.” The Ideya wobbled, so tantalizingly red, atop Jackle’s outstretched palm, twisting and stretching the grin behind it with every tilt. “Besides… when NiGHTS captured a visitor’s Ideya, wasn’t it your victory, too?” But that was different, he wanted to argue, him and NiGHTS had been two halves of a team, equal players in their plans. And even if NiGHTS had been the one bringing back Ideya more often, it certainly wasn’t due to any failure on Reala’s part… and yet, there he was, returning empty-handed from his first outing to Nightopia in weeks. What Jackle said had been true— as long as Wizeman received the Ideya, there would be no question as to if Reala had really been the one to steal it. The deal would inevitably come with a price. Ideya wasn’t NiGHTS. But a red Ideya would inch him closer into Wizeman’s favor, prove his worth, keep him out of the Ideya Palace for good.

But Jackle liked being known as a death-bringer, relished in the dread that flooded any Nightmaren’s life that he entered, and so kept the real reason for this visit a card kept close to him— this time, Reala would defy fate, because this visit aligned both with one of Jackle’s other reasons for appearing and another thing he quite enjoyed: personal gain. Reala, despite the crushing weight of his recent failure, was still an extraordinarily powerful Nightmaren, the only remaining first level, the Nightmaren who was closer to the master than any other. Jackle had thought about it since he’d first heard that master had finally created real first-levels— but the potential benefits of being in Reala’s good graces were too numerous to ignore any longer, and now that his former companion was out of the picture… (He had tried once already with NiGHTS, when they were still new and unfamiliar with the world they’d been created in, but first-level naïveté and narcissism and second-level insecurity resulted in a horrible, violent clash— all he had gained from it was an enemy in both NiGHTS and Reala.) This time, though, NiGHTS wouldn’t be an issue, and Jackle could offer one thing Reala couldn’t refuse. Reala had been born into constant companionship, hadn’t he? NiGHTS was the very first thing he had ever seen, even before Wizeman, and they had been together nearly every second since— until recently, of course. Their relationship had transcended their jobs as Nightmaren, they were siblings, twins (Jackle didn’t know what that meant or entailed, but he remembered how NiGHTS liked to let everyone know). And days in the Ideya Palace were long and lonely, ripe with room to regret and ruminate on the past— Jackle could help with that. He could make himself a new companion for Reala. Maybe even a better one.

old and very unfinished fic about reala and jackle trying to decide what to get nights for christmas because Orange Critter is still on my mind 🤭
“Do you know what you’re getting NiGHTS for Christmas yet?” “What I’m getting them…? Are we supposed to get things?” Jackle stared at Reala over his quickly-dwindling hand of Uno cards, one eyebrow raised (well, probably. That was the impression Reala got, at least). Meeting up like this had become a bit of a tradition, a few times every week, sometimes with NiGHTS, usually just the two of them. Reala would come in just to visit his older sibling before everyone settled down for bed, whatever time of day that may have been, and because Jackle seemed to own every card known to both human and Maren-kind, it often involved some sort of game. (Speaking of every card, Reala mentally checked that off the list of potential gifts he had begun forming in his mind. If only Jackle had never found out about Uno— Reala assumed Claris had shown him— this would have been an easy Christmas… and it probably would have stopped quite a bit of sibling bickering over the past few months.) Hundreds of years worth of collecting all manner of things - surely there had to be something NiGHTS would want. And at least the hoard was fairly organized, similar items grouped together, the things Jackle especially liked (cards, coins, sharp things) closer to the front, easiest to grab when he reached into his cape. “…Can I have this?” “Only if it means I don’t have to find a present for you now, too.” Too deeply invested in rooting through the mountain of objects in front of him, he didn’t even bother turning to see what Reala had found. Jackle certainly didn’t mind losing a few items, and even if it was something good, he probably had another one somewhere— “Great, I always wanted a sword.”

wanted to practice an interaction between NiD characters who aren’t NiGHTS or Reala + I think Jackle and Puffy would have a funny dynamic lol. They kinda hate each other but there’s no one else to talk to before N&R are created
The door to her lair swings completely open, slamming against the wall it’s hinged to with a crash that makes her ears curl in— Jackle knew it would, and that was why he did it every time he visited, letting himself right in with an equally bothersome crow: “Hellooo, lady, I'm here!” The only Nightmaren other than herself with the ability to speak, though, Jackle had been good— no, maybe not good, interesting was a better word— interesting conversation. For a bit. When he was new, and when he hadn’t yet learned exactly how to test her patience. (So, for a short time.) This disruption happened often, how often, she couldn’t say, with no sense of time in Nightmare, but Jackle was never, had never been too busy to come by. “It’s nice here.” That was the simple reason he’d given when she’d asked what made her home so preferable to his own, only eyes and a smile as he’d buried himself beneath the plush linings of her bed, (cuts off here due to photo limit, continues on next photo) (continued from last picture) sheets and blankets wrapping around an invisible form (he’d seemed too comfortable to care much about being given away so easily). Other times she would find him at her mirrors, chirping and baring his teeth at his reflection; or sat at her table as if he’d always been there, reciting to her the latest revelations from his card readings between stolen mouthfuls of roast Nightopian. “And, look, I even brought you something this time.” He saunters up the hallway to the dining table, slapping down a hastily-bound-together bouquet of odd, withering flowers with a self-satisfied smirk. “Can’t call me uncouth now, right...?” “Does Gillwing know you took those from his lair?” “Wouldn’t be here if he did.” One could always hope for next time. “But anyways, listen.”
