Wot's all this then
Saw a great blue heron chilling in the creek earlier today, looking grumpy and standing very statue-like. Reminded me that I've been wanting to rewatch The Boy and The Heron.

Saw some lovely yellow roses while out and about today. My own rose has (I think) finished its last flush of the season, so it was nice to see these looking fresh and healthy in October! #bloomscrolling #gardenreport

Was stunned by the beautiful sky this morning when I went to the gym. Looking into it, it seems this was a conjunction with the moon, Venus, and the star Regulus. Lucky it was clear as well! 🤩

Passed by a beautiful late summer rose today! Always special to see the last ones of the season. This garden we pass is what inspired me to try my own rose planting this year. 🌹#bloomscrolling

Been awhile since I posted a rose pic! I continue to be delighted with how my plant is growing. This is from my third flush of the year, right after a little late summer cloudburst. #gardenreport #bloomscrolling

I love how this photo shows the way the rose blooms change over their lifecycle - they start out pinker/more lavender, and as they get older they fade out to white. #bloomscrolling #GardenReport

The Silver Lining rose is classified as "floribunda," meaning it's known for having clusters of flowers rather than a single large bloom on the stem. This is the first time I've seen my plant really live up to that description - there are eleven on here! I love it! #bloomscrolling #gardenreport

I don't know if this bee's fuzziness will really come through, but aaaaauggh, he was so cute. 💛🖤

My rose had a little ladybug visitor this week to help me with the aphids. 🐞 The next batch of blooms is definitely on its way, and looks promising! #bloomscrolling #garden

Here's the very last photo of my first rain-drenched roses before I deadheaded the stem. 💔 Bittersweet to see them go, BUT! Looking at the next photo, you can see I've got a vibrant second flush of roses on the way, now that the roots' energy will be freed up!

My first cluster of roses finally hit the end of their bloom this week. I noticed them looking droopy, then starting to darken around the edges. Shortly after this photo, the petals completely fell off of one. #gardening

Deadheaded my rose for the first time today! The littlest flower got blown apart by a rainstorm. I angled my cut to drain water away from the stem to avoid fungal issues. This will give the plant more energy to support new growth and more blooms!

After the first bud opened last week, more and more quickly joined in. I'm surprised at how big the blossoms are, and how closely clustered they are. With all the chaos and ugliness in the world this week, it's felt very centering and soul-nourishing to tend this plant. 🌹 #bloomscrolling #rose

New rosebuds opening up next to the older flower. I'm so glad I picked this cool, lavender one! #bloomscrolling

Opening up more and more every day - so lovely! #bloomscrolling

Here are a few progress pics from the week - it's been so fun to watch!

She bloooooomed!!! This week, my first rose has opened up. It started Tuesday, and here's where she was on Saturday morning. It's been a deep, true joy to see this transition - there are few things as good for my mental health as helping something beautiful to live and thrive. 💚

Here's the progress on those sprouts from last week - they definitely are starting to stretch out as new branches and unfurl lots of leaves.
May 31, 2025 at 5:31 PM
Josephine is 34-35" tall now, so not much new height since last week - her energy is more focused on growing her first flowers! The aphids have been mostly beaten back (the sneaky one in this photo has since been removed), and we can see light-colored petals starting to peek out. I'm so excited!!
May 31, 2025 at 5:28 PM
Also some interesting little sprouts appeared at some leaf nodes lower on the plant (photo taken after the aphids were chased away - they sure liked these). Not sure if this is a new branch starting to stretch out? We'll see!

Weekly rose update! She's 33" tall now and the leaves all look healthy. Dealt with our first aphid attack this week; no surprise, since they love new growth. 😋 At the top, I'm seeing a little group of larger buds that look different from the leaf buds I saw before - maybe my first blossoms coming?!

I'm absolutely enthralled with her pretty pink thorns. 🩷 I didn't know they'd be so cute!
May 20, 2025 at 6:23 AM
Bit late with my rose report this week. It's been raining a ton, so I barely had to water. She's 30" at the longest branch now and starting to look bushier! I do wonder whether I should prune her into a rounder shape, but will leave her alone for now, as I don't want to impede her healthy growth.

Weekly Josephine update! The longest cane is now 26" and the lower branches are starting to catch up. I used (verrrry whiffy) fish fertilizer for the first time, and it may have helped stave off some leaf-yellowing I saw low on the plant. Feels like I learn new things every time I check back! ☺️

My little rose plant is now two weeks old, and making good progress! The longest cane is five inches taller and there are lots of new leaves popping out. She's looking pretty!
