It's exactly this. Same with the Supra. Somehow now believed to be hardcore street racers in their day and not, as was actually the case, often specced with an auto 'box and driven by mature empty nesters.

I saw a well-known car media person saying something like this and it boggled my mind. Woeful misunderstanding of how the car industry works. For a start, where is Honda getting a RWD platform from?

I get the impression that engineers still have a lot of clout within Honda. So they sign off these cars that are technically interesting and quite clever, but need explaining or have to be driven to be appreciated. The sales & marketing department must despair.

My perception is that Hondas generally have a bit more weight to everything compared to Toyotas or Nissans. Not Germanic weight, just a little more meat.

Apparently they studied the Alpine A110 in the making of the new Prelude, not because they were making a rival but because they wanted to look at how it was kept relatively light.
