This continues to increase the potential for further transmission, particularly in Africa.

Mpox remains a virus that primarily spreads within specific networks and among particularly vulnerable groups, either due to high numbers of sexual contacts or general living conditions. (10/12)

Overall, the countries currently experiencing active transmission i still rising over time and now affects more than countries with af population of more than 300 mio. (6/12)
June 3, 2025 at 2:56 PM
At the Africa CDC meeting, it was also reported that there is now transmission in the southern part of Ethiopia. There is significant concern about preventing further spread in Ethiopia. (4/12)

The paper indicates that the outbreak is primarily driven by young people and sexual networks at this time. While clade is IIb spread pattern looks alot like reports from clade Ib in West Africa

Sierra Leone currently has the highest number of reported cases and now bears the greatest case burden across countries.

@kindrachukjason.bsky.social and colleagues have published a preprint on the demographics of mpox cases in Sierra Leone – https://t.co/D9QosVP1Bq. (2/12)

Brief Update on Mpox in Africa

Africa CDC held its press briefing on health crises in Africa this past Thursday. During the meeting, it was presented that the situation in Sierra Leone shows some signs of decline but remains at a high level of cases. (1/12)

Hopefully, human exposure will decline as the number of new infected farms in CA decreases. However, there remains a risk of cross-border transmission to Mexico, particularly if infected farms appear in the Brawley/Mexicali area. Fomites on clothing, humans, or equipment could facilitate transport.
December 6, 2024 at 9:25 PM
I couldn’t find official epicurve data for human cases, so I scraped the lists from flutrackers.com to approximate it. There are some discrepancies. I have 62 confirmed cases and 10 unconfirmed, while the CDC reports 58. I plotted this against confirmed farms - shows a decent dose-response relation.
December 6, 2024 at 9:25 PM
As over 50% of farms in CA are now infected, the daily number of new cases is expected to decline due to a depletion of susceptible farms in CA. The is limited data on cow seroconversion. Too early to determine how easily they might be reinfected or if their calves will have partial immunity.

Proportion of farms affected by #birdflu in each state show that 58% of farms in California that sold milk in 2022 (USDA Census) data is confirmed positive. To my knowledge no newer census data exists.

#H5N1 in cattle. USDA official data. Fewer new farms in last couple of USDA updates. 722 farms confirmed so far. Vast majority of farms found is in California - but they have also been doing bulk milk testing, so they are probably finding a higher proportion of infected farms than other states.
December 6, 2024 at 9:25 PM
#H5N1 at dairy cattle farms confirmed per state in US per 25.november 2024. California still on a steep curve.

Growth is driven by high increase in the number of farms affected in California. Growth should start to fall in California in the coming weeks, as approx. 50% of all farms in CA has been affected.

Update on #H5N1 in cattle.

The trend of average number of new farms still increasing. A total of 618 farms is affected. Here as a proportion of all farms that sold milk in 2022 (USDA cencus data).

Lastly, the proportion of confirmed infected farms per state is calculated using USDA's 2022 census data on milk-selling farms. Newer census data isn't available (yet), so these estimates rely on the latest figures which is problaby a bit wrong.
November 19, 2024 at 2:02 AM
The total number of confirmed infected dairy farms across states is 551, this is excluding an alpaca farm and minipigs at a backyard farm. The map shows state-level details, with California leading at 335.
November 19, 2024 at 2:02 AM
Using USDA's 2022 census data on milk-selling farms, we can estimate the proportion of farms in each state confirmed as infected.

USDA’s 2022 Census shows 24,470 farms in the U.S. sold milk, a 39% drop from 2017. State-by-state data helps estimate the proportion of infected farms. (2/4)

Short thread: H5N1 in cattle. USDA is sharing data consistently on their website on weekdays now. See the latest updates here: https://www.aphis.usda.gov/livestock-poultry-disease/avian/avian-influenza/hpai-detections/livestock. California remains on a steep curve, as shown on the map below. (1/4)

It's unclear exactly which definitions are being used to categorize admitted cases (e.g., isolation facility?).
