Wrote this about him over a year ago at this point. Obed’s been on a supplemental contract despite being an undroppable player for us for way too long imo
But Sounders also need to keep their players happy, and it doesn't sound like either Reed or Obed are short on options elsewhere. A player as key as Obed has been for us for the better part of three seasons now (63 appearances and 4,500 minutes) should not remain on a Supplemental Contract if we want to avoid turning friends into enemies, so giving him a contract that reflects his value and performance should be a priority if he's not going to be sold right away.

And to round it out, the big one: playoffs/MLS Cup. Here’s my prediction: semi-final at minimum.
I think it's fair to say that if we do not make the playoffs, this season will have been a catastrophic failure. That is the bare minimum goal. Even if we win one of the cups - some accomplishment considering the way the draws went — but don't make the playoffs, I'm not sure that would justify it. We have more than enough quality. But I also don't think we'll just scrape into them. Schmetzer has shown that he know how to win MLS playoff matches, and with the this team, I expect us to go deep into them. I think we should expect a home seeding from our place in the league, and at least a semi-final berth minimum to live up to where I expect us to be. I don't think there's anyone in the league that we should fear in a playoff knockout round, and I think it will come down to whether we can get our defense and offense balanced correctly. Last year we were calibrated to give nothing away, but we didn't score enough goals. Preseason this season seems to indicate that we might be leaning slightly the other way, although as noted it's very hard to draw any concrete conclusions from four preseason matches as the team is working out kinks in a new formation. But threading that needle, both from a personnel and tactical perspective is going to be the challenge for Schmetzer. God knows he's got the options.

On to League play: my prediction was 71 points, which made me lol when I read it again. What was I thinking? Well, here’s what I was thinking, judge for yourself and then read on:
Here's where we need to make it count. Schmetzer's got a team. As I hope I showed above, it's deep, it's versatile, it has a lot of quality from top to bottom. It's built for overland travel, to be able to withstand the peaks and valleys of the season, weather the injury absences, suspensions, and all the other things that occur throughout a season. We need to make that count. What we can't do this time is take a three-month stretch off in the middle of the season. We've done that each of the last three seasons, in what is becoming a real trend, and I don't want to see it again. We can't throw points away or allow rough stretches to extend longer than they should. We need to points maximize. Let's beat the fucking Timbers this season. I am so goddamned sick of dropping points to those numbskulls. Don't get me started on the Earthquakes. We need to crush all of these idiots. Let's lock it down defensively and score more goals this time. We're rolling three deep at every position with players who are trusted. I want to win the Shield this year. I think we have a very good shot at it. In my opinion, with the team and depth we have, this trophy should be ours. I will guess we get 71 points and that leaves us at or runners up to Supporters' Shield winners.

On to Leagues Cup, the highlight of the 2025 season. I suggested we would really go for this but predicted heroic failure in the semi-final.
It's a bit nice to have a chance to go against Santos Laguna again, as we beat them last time we played them in Leagues Cup in 2021 en route to the final. I think playing and replaying the same team a few times in the same few years can build up a bit of an informal rivalry and will make these games feel higher stakes. But at least for me, right now, this entire tournament still gives a whiff of the artificial and consequently this tournament is like at the very low end of my priorities. That will change in time, I'm sure. Whether or not the club feels the same is not a question I know the answer to. That said, in looking at the matchups, of the three cup competitions we are involved in, I think Leagues Cup is the one we likely have the best chance to do anything in. The draw was kinder to us here than in CCC and certainly much easier than in CWC, and it is two fewer matches than CCC is. So perhaps, if we have to prioritize, maybe this is the one to go for. For that reason, I will guess we will get to the semi-final, but won't be able to get beyond there.

Next up: CWC. My prediction was that we’d fail to advance from the group and struggle to get a point on the pitch, but warm hearts in the process
I don't want to be a doomer about it, but if we get a point, I'll be thrilled. I don't care that neither Atlético nor PSG will be in season. The sheer number of players that Madrid and Paris produce means that their F- teams, featuring nothing but 16-year olds from Clairefontaine and we'd still have our work cut out for us. That said, I can't wait. I have no expectations for us to succeed, but I'm just excited to watch it unfold, watch our guys take on real stars, watch João Paulo take on his former club, and watch our guys make us proud. It will be a thrill, a spectacle. But I don't expect us to advance from the group.

Next up: CCC. Here’s what I predicted: quarterfinal exit
Now, look, the Sounders could do it, but just about every other quadrant of this bracket looks like a more straightforward path to me, so I think it's safe to say I don't have huge hopes for this tournament this season. Again, I wai to remain optimistic, and I think the Sounders can beat anyone in our region on our day, but we all know what Concacaf play is like. It starts early in the season, against teams well into the swing of their seasons, who have bigger budgets and significantly less restrictive squad building rules. So let's see how it goes, but I'm not holding out a ton of hope this year here. I think the way our squad is built, with the extremely high floor but maybe lacking the tip top level at the sharp end, I think we'll be competitive but simply won't have the horses to run with the big boys when we get there. Consequently, I'll guess that we crash out in the quarterfinals.

First up, USOC. Here’s what I wrote about it.
The Seattle Sounders, as one of the flagships of club soccer in the United States, should be in it. I've heard a lot of people say they don't really care about this tournament because we've already won it four times. I understand that line of argument, but I basically see it the complete other way. The fact that we've won it so many times makes me want to win it more times, to keep going, until everyone just associates us with the entire tournament. I'd be fine being complacent about US Open Cup if we had six titles to our name at sat alone at the top. Until then, I want to keep winning it. I recognize the concerns people have brought up about fixture congestion. Those are real concerns. It's more than likely that this season will feature more competitive first team games than any season in Sounders' history, and if we played in this tournament, the number of matches for the Sounders could have theoretically creeped into the 70s. But not participating in the US Open Cup does almost nothing to alleviate it. The early rounds of the US Open Cup, as everyone knows, is played almost exclusively by short term loans from Tacoma and bottom roster Sounders guys, meaning the first team players who need the rest likely wouldn't even be part of the gameday roster, at least for the period where the tournament would overlap with Concacaf Champions Cup. I think the experience of playing for the first team in real competitive matches where the goal is to win have been really beneficial for the Sounders over time, and it's a shame that won't continue. This last point is obviously mitigated by the fact that Tacoma will be playing in the tournament instead, and therefore most likely 80% of the squad that would have played had the Sounders been participating will end up playing anyway. But I still don't think it's the same. Merely slipping into the Defiance strip and playing in front of 150 people is qualitatively different to getting the opportunity to play a first team game in Sounders green, with the expectations and responsibility that comes from playing with and against seasoned pros at a packed Starfire. And, frankly, when you look at the potential match ups in the other cup competitions we have, it makes me long for the days of beating down Kitsap Pumas, because it is not going to be easy. We don't have an easy road anywhere. Anyway, I can write my little blog posts saying so as much as I want, but it's never going to stop the oligarchs when they smell dollars. I'm not really bent out of shape about it, but I would prefer it were different (I'd rather ditch Leagues Cup, you'll be unsurprised to hear). Such is life.
