i'm kind of on a "PHONE BAD" kick lately but it's just become so normalized and widespread to have some degree of phone addiction. it made me think of the occupational health & safety hierarchy of hazard controls.
shouldn't the fact that we need these things be a sign that something is deeply wrong?
Hierarchy of Controls pyramid from top to bottom for smartphones: Elimination: Physically remove the hazard from the workplace. This is the most effective control because it completely removes the risk. (live like it's 1999? become unreachable? log off?) Substitution: Replace the hazardous material or process with a less hazardous one. (use social media on a desktop or different device, dumbphones, older models) Engineering Controls: Isolate people from the hazard by installing safety features or modifying equipment. This involves a physical change to the workplace or process. (phone lock boxes, physical controls like opal, brick) Administrative Controls: Change the way people work by implementing policies or procedures, such as rotating workers or changing work schedules. (screentime apps, social media blockers, parental controls, greyscale) Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Provide workers with protective gear like gloves, safety glasses, or respirators. This is the least effective control because it doesn't eliminate the hazard itself, only protects the individual from it. (blue light glasses)
