considering how much money gets wasted in Hollywood anyway... if it took the Akira production millions to arrive to the (correct) conclusion that they probably shouldn't do it at all, honestly that's money well spent.

And let's not ignore the poetic significance of such a visual language when a major plotline concerns the abuse of a pair of literal miniature humans.

"but you can obviously see its all miniatures". Yeah sure, but how lovely is it that in those sequences the shots of actual people are wide and filmed from a high angle as if the actors and their environment are miniature scale as well.

The film’s first hour or so is very dense with exposition and (to our eyes) awkward physical acting. But once Mothra approaches Tokyo it delightfully jarringly switches to long uninterrupted dialogueless sequences of pure destruction. Haptic cinema, as academics would say.
