I write books filled with lies, beautiful lies about the tropics, detectives and imaginary friends. My mom likes 'em!

my wife just marched into my office and demanded to know why i told her to listen to The Jungle - she just got the first part with the pig slaughtering.

crazy that Upton Sinclair's work remains powerful and relevant a hundred+ years after publication

To illustrate my assertion about men largely being non-readers: the #mensfiction hashtag is a ghost town
June 6, 2025 at 4:10 PM
If you're a dude coming across my posts, and you're looking for contemporary #fiction outside SFF, check out Carl Hiaasen or my buddy Wayne Stinnett, or John D MacDonald if you want something retro (and fantastic)

Anyway, I think the biggest share of male readers are primarily looking at #SFF (I base the assumption on my gut), but if you're a man looking outside that genre, you're left mostly with Tom Clancy-esque stuff. And society has deemed that genre as uncool, so...

...and because there are so few #mensfiction books out there, men don't have a lot to pick from so they lose interest in reading altogether, which makes publishing fiction books aimed at men even riskier, and fiction pub is extremely risk-adverse.

My gut feeling as to why men don't engage in fiction reading is there exists a feedback loop. Publishers know that the vast majority of fiction readers are women, and publishing is a business, so they make books for their biggest market segment, leading to a lack of #mensfiction works...

Lately, I've been thinking a lot about why most men my age and (40 y/o to teens-ish) don't read #fiction. I'm still trying to put together a coherent argument, but man this article from #Dazed presents a lot of compelling info

Why don’t straight men read novels?
Men often read non-fiction books in the name of self-improvement – but many are reluctant to pick up works of fiction

Today's writing had me thinking about abuse and why it is generational. i think there's a lot of people growing up with the attitude of "well, it wasn't as bad as I got it!" which excuses a lot of really awful behavior.

One of the fringe benefits of fiction writing is one eclectic-ass #Youtube feed, and it's related to work!

Bill Burr obviously says controversial things, but I always appreciate someone willing to bear their emotional vulnerabilities in a honest way. I also love how he and Terry Gross argue with each other. Don't think I've ever heard a guest do that with her!

Today's #philosophical question - inspired by Terry Gross' interview with Bill Burr.

Can a human being ever fully undo the emotional or #psychological damage done to them?

What does childhood innocence mean? Can it be regained if it is lost, or is it spoiled once and bad forever?

If it can be regained, how? A new environment? Better role models? A change in the child's psyche?

Or is it best to drop the idea of innocence and let the kid move on?

In my mind, the hierarchy is thus:
My kid - My Wife
The Dogs
Me

Why do I need to be liked?
My folks
They raised me right
My house is happy
I’m strong
I’m weak
My mind is frightened
They tore me down
My peers
Why did I take it to heart?
