to me, “you should create for yourself” and “you deserve to be acknowledged for what you make” are two statements that should coexist. chasing engagement will rot your soul, while being neglected will see your passion wither. loving what you make is a failsafe for when the engagement never comes.

“Do I even have a choice?” I asked, feeling the shadows of his unspoken threat stretch between us. “There are always choices.” His gaze was unwavering, cold and absolute. “You may choose to accept my offer, become one of my champions. Gain a foothold in these games and survive. Or… persist in your defiance, testing the limits of your capabilities until it shatters your body.” His hand pressed against my chest, and instinctively, I recoiled, my spine biting into the bedding as pain flared sharp and unyielding, a reminder of my injuries—of my own fragility. “What’s your choice, Kamishen?” His hand pressed further into me. His touch was unnaturally warm, a twisted soothing feel even as it heightened my agony. “Survival,” I breathed, each syllable catching in my throat, my voice betraying the shame that clawed within me. “Good.” His voice was soft, almost tender, smug satisfaction glinting in his eyes as he drew his hand back and rose to stand. “Rest, heal. This is your new cell now, a gift befitting one of my own.”

“Duck.” I dropped instantly, the crack of his gun deafening as bullets zipped over me. I turned to see two Ferals charging from the shadows, their pale, wasted bodies snapping into motion. “I Scarlet, you UV,” Atash ordered, firing again. “On it!” I called back, adrenaline sharpening my focus as I drew the stake. I lunged at the nearest Feral, my moves more assured this time, the burn of fear tempered by necessity. The sound of a manic laugh cut through the air, freezing me for half a second. Another Feral approached, his body jerking with unsteady movements, the guttural laugh spilling out like a broken record.
