I think it's because the oldest part of Auschwitz was a camp largely for political prisoners who in the early days of the camp could be released if they conformed to Nazi values.

Not the strongest, but most widespread. Went to a triple bill showing of the extended LoTR - showing to an audience of nerds (naturally!). The kicking the helmet scene in the Two Towers was accompanied by most of the cinema muttering to each other "Vigo Mortensen broke his toe you know"
