And we must remember that although most people feel that they are in a minority who want climate action, we are actually in a majority of around 69%.

📺 If you buy a new appliance, larger stores must offer to take your old one away for free, saving you a trip to the local tip. If you do go to the tip, unlike other waste, the cost of WEEE treatment and recycling is paid by electronics producers through a compliance scheme, not your council tax.

📱 Electronic waste has had EPR since 2013, when the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations (fondly known as WEEE) came into force. You now see in-store collection points, where you can ditch your old phone, laptop or iPod (remember those?).

🌱 Any packaging with less environmental impact or cheaper to recycle will pay lower fees. Lower fees mean lower prices. So shoppers get offered a product with lower environmental impact at a lower price - going against the idea of a ‘green premium’ for more sustainable products.

🚦 Individual producers will pay higher or lower fees when ‘fee modulation’ takes effect in 2026. This will apply a traffic-light system to packaging based on how easy it is to recycle. Red packaging pays more, green packaging pays less.
