I mean, compare and contrast...

The rain brought the blight out, so it's the end of the road for this year's tomatoes. And a big pile of green figs to turn into Greek-style spoon sweets.

Seven weeks to the solar minimum, give or take.

Second-crop "Brown Turkey" figs, outdoor-grown, UK.

(Not usually possible to ripen these, but it's been a warmer year than usual).

Not saying it's been a warm summer or anything, but I just looked in the garden and my second-crop figs are ripening.

(Not usually something that happens in the UK, afaict?)

Same energy (not 'shopped. Actual "street art" courtesy of Croydon's local flagshaggers).

They tried shouting at hotels but their lungs were too knackered from PM10s; they tried writing England on buildings but it came out like the photo below, so now they're sticking to flags on roundabouts:

That's a reasonable use of land on, say, a windswept peninsula north of Edinburgh.

Rather less so in Wimbledon, Dulwich, Richmond etc.

The absolute state of this corner of SW London... added up they're getting on for the size of Richmond Park.

Fermentation stations!

2x Sauvignon Blanc, 2x whole hop ale, 1x apple cider.

The community of London would like our control back from the idiots who, not satisfied with having inflicted Brexshit on us, now want to make it hard for our Ukrainian, Korean, Ghanaian, French and Afghan friends to stay and live settled lives, thanks.

You go appease racist pensioners. We won't.

Why oh why do Labour keep on trying to appease the absolute worst in society?

Answer in the picture. (May contain profanity).

Even by the standards of the Are Country lot, this is.. well, look at it.

The family are out on a shopping trip and, despite being at least a three minute walk from the nearest 'Spoons, have encountered some Fine and Legitimately Concernèd Patriots of the Master Race.

Didn't help the overall vibe that three of these had just gone low overhead. Probably making sure there weren't any grans out and about with proscribed slogans on their shirts.

From there, twenty miles or so of Marriotts Way.

Traffic-free, easy to follow, very reminiscent of the Downs Link, Worth Way, Cuckoo Trail.

Nice one Sustrans, or whatever it is you're calling yourselves now. (Walking, wheeling, wandering, womble-ing free?)

Day 3 - a bit of ad-hoc routing. The Boy had mentioned a Sustrans route running north from Norwich that he'd done with a schoolfriend a while back.

Sounded good, and only fifteen or so miles away via country lanes.

Komoot did us proud. Bit of climbing out of Sheringham but easy going after that.

Back along the Coastal Roller route to Sheringham and our YHA accommodation.

How can a flat county be this hilly, dammit?
September 7, 2025 at 11:28 AM
So we thought we'd take a different route out of Wells and follow the clearly way-marked NCN1 running due south.

It's easy to follow, but the surfaces deteriorate fast. The others had mountain/hybrid bikes, and I'm not precious about putting my road bike through rough stuff, but still. Heavy going.

Up until a few years ago, there was a narrow-gauge rail shuttle that used to chug up and down from the town to the beach.

It fell into disrepair in the 2010s and a bus now does the shuttling - seems like converting its old alignment to a cycling and wheeling-friendly path ought to be an easy win.

Wells itself and its beach is gorgeous.

They do however need to sort something out for cycling to and from the beach, about a mile or so from town. The nominally shared-use paths on the sea wall are narrow and busy to a point that it doesn't feel right to cycle them; the road is pretty busy also.
