“The police protect the elite from us.” Stafford didn’t say it for effect. He’s lived the kind of struggle where that sentence makes sense. We dug into what power looks like when you’re on the wrong side of it.
Trying to Build Utopia
Stafford Taylor returns to talk about life after homelessness, building a community garden, traveling to India, and writing The Transcendence Manifesto. We get into what he’s learned from living through hardship, why individualism isolates us, and how community and care can bring us closer to freedo

Stafford’s story isn’t theory. It’s the mess of real life, homelessness, burnout, small wins, and the stubborn belief that people can do better together. We talked about what community really takes.
Trying To Build Utopia with Stafford Taylor

I find that lately I get very annoyed by people who use the word libertarian without the qualifier of right wing if they're talking about right wing libertarians.

Underneath it all, this episode is about frustration and hope. We’ve all felt worn down by outrage, but we still believe it’s possible to stay human and build something better together.

a few months ago I said "having generative AI handle absolutely anything with regards to healthcare is a nightmare and should be banned" and a bunch of people made fun of me and called me stupid. anyways,

“We’re living in air-conditioned boxes.” Stafford said it halfway through our talk about comfort, isolation, and how easy it is to mistake convenience for a life. He’s not wrong.

"If you taise taxes the people and companies with all that money you want will leave"

Let them, all they do is extract value from us. The resources they use and the infrastructure they rely on are ours. We do the work to make them money. We don't need them stealing from us

It's good to fact-check tyrants, but let's not forget this wouldn't be okay even if they were trafficking drugs. Drugs is just another arbitrary reason to gain and wield power.

We looked at some criticism we got after a past episode and talked about what it showed us about interpretation. People can hear the same words in completely different ways, which says a lot about how hard it is to communicate across political spaces.
Everyone's Angry and No One's Listening
Owen and I start by talking about criticism we received after a previous episode and how it made us think about the limits of communication in political spaces. That leads into a discussion about a stream Owen did with someone who says they’ve left the left, and what that mindset reveals about anger

Solidarity means standing with people who need you. That’s it. You don’t do it to look good or because it’s easy. You do it because it’s right, because if you won’t stand with people when they need you, then what’s the point of any of it?

Real listening is rare. The noise keeps people divided because silence doesn’t sell. We talked about slowing down enough to actually hear each other and how that act alone can be a form of resistance.

People love being certain. It feels safe. But certainty shuts the door on conversation. The moment you think you already know what someone means, you stop hearing what they’re saying.
