Just yesterday, I received my first effective denial letter with their pathetic brief snippet of information. What I find interesting is that in their letter they state "the request is for a deceased Veteran's claim file for genealogy purposes." Nothing in my request states that to be my purpose 1/3
This is in response to your privacy FOIA request dated February 27, 2024. The request is for a deceased Veteran's claim file for genealogy purposes. We are providing you with the following record(s): • Veteran's name, date, city, and state of birth on a birth certificate • Veteran's name, date, city, and state of marriage on a marriage license • - Veteran's parents' names (if deceased) • Veteran's name, city and state of entry on active duty on a DO214 • Veteran's name, date, city, and state of divorce decree, • Veterans spouses' name (if deceased) VBA has determined the above information meets the description of genealogy records, 38 C.F.R. § 1.505 Genealogy, and furthermore is not considered detrimental to the memory of the Veteran and/or prejudicial to the interests of the Veteran's survivors and the Government. To retrieve your records: er your request, paper copies of your responsive records are enclosed. VBA will withhold the remaining documents and/or information contained within the claim file under the following exemptions: FOIA Exemption 3, 5 U.S.C. § 552(b)(3), as information contained in the C-File that is not considered genealogy information per 38 C.F.R. § 1.505 Genealogy does not meet the ''useful purpose" principle of 38 U.S.C. § 5701, Confidential nature of claims.

It really was an awesome find! Folks - this was all we had to go on, and EDNY Natz proved fruitless! Turns out, this natz took place at Fort Hamilton and was in a separate record set! #Genealogy Way to go Áine!!

There are some pretty wonderful features included in the MyHeritage @myheritageofficial.bsky.social DNA update. One of my favorites is that it gives you matches by where they live now! So, for example, I can see how many people still living in Italy have tested and how I match with them! #Genealogy

APG Members, There are more than 81,000 missing Armed Forces and civilian personnel, and a vast number of records that might provide families with answers have yet to be identified, located, transferred to the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), or even declassified. This is why APG supports the Bring Our Heroes Home Act (S.2315/H.R.3110) and calls on APG members to join us in urging Congress to pass the legislation as part of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2025. The Bring Our Heroes Home Act (BOHHA) would form a "Missing Armed Forces and Civilian Personnel Records Collection" within NARA, which has long coordinated and administered collections such as this one. However, Congress must provide NARA with sufficient funding so it can provide the departments and agencies the support they will need to accomplish the goals of BOHHA. Furthermore, to ensure NARA’s success, Congress must provide additional funding so NARA can support the additional workload of cataloging and storing documents to make records easily accessible for families who seek closure. Please take a few minutes to contact your Senators and Representative and tell them why they should support this bi-partisan legislation. Decisions will be made in the coming days, so take action today! Hello from the Italian Genealogical Group! OUR NEXT MEETING: Saturday, December 14, 11:00 AM (Eastern) Each year, the format of the December meeting is different from that of our regular meetings. This year, in addition to highlights from our recent conference, our VP of Programming, Pamela Vittorio, has arranged for a panel of experts to answer questions that have arisen from recent changes in the rules for dual citizenship. Alec Ferretti, Kelly Barbano-Bodami and Francesca Werden will be discussing these changes and answering questions from the audience. Pamela will also be announcing some special offers and, of course, we will be spinning the wheel for some special prizes! You have two ways of attending our meetings: If you're in the New York area, we hope you'll join us IN PERSON at the Bethpage Public Library (47 Powell Avenue, Bethpage, Long Island). The webinar presentation will be presented remotely and projected on the large screen. Doors will open 9:30. We hope you can join us and see some old friends or make some new ones!
