it's crazy that 500 years ago, you would see the ruler of your country maybe once in your life and hear whispers that they're the Sun God, but now with social media, you get to see on a daily basis that they're the most unhinged, idiotic, and unhappy person you know

Is it just me or has he got new frilly ribbons on his shoulders? Or have they always been there? What are they? Like, robe epaulettes or something?

Also, all that ostentatious frockery does not fit well over the militaristic nonsense underneath.

I wonder what @dieworkwear.bsky.social would think.

I know it happens, but it would never have occurred to actually watch it. "Rich bloke has opinions" is what most media amounts to. I'm not any more drawn to his special broadcast just because he's got an uncommonly spangly hat.

People are frightened of the implications of 'serious'. And I can't say I fully blame them. Because 'serious' is what's going to be required to make the game end.

Emphasis on 'make'. It isn't going to happen by itself. It isn't all going to just spring back into place.

It's because it's all about performance. It always has been, right from the roots. Modern evangelicalism isn't about belief, nor expressing faith by living like Christ (as a pagan I will say: we'd be SO much better off if it was).

It's about showing off how much better you are than your neighbour.

So the question is not 'how can we make this work'. As someone else in your replies has pointed out, that's a solved problem.

The question is, how can we get those obscenely rich profiteers to allow it to be set up, and to leave it alone once it is?

they need to make it appear to fail by itself. Their goal being to install a system like yours, where our health and lives are fuel in a machine that makes ever more money for a handful of obscenely rich profiteers.

But it does work. So far, it remains standing. Bruised, bleeding, but still going.
a man in a suit and tie is saying that he can do this all day .
Alt: From 'Captain America' (ironically given the comparison), a pre-serum Steve Rogers stands in an alleyway, holding his hands in fists, saying to an opponent out of frame, "I can do this all day."

because we've been ruled by a succession of increasingly extreme right-wing parties who are doing everything they can to apply pressure to the system via chronic underfunding and hostile policies. They can't simply shut it down because the public support it, obviously, so ->

treatment, but these are hugely reduced and exemptions provided for those of particularly limited means. But most consultations and treatment are free at point of need.)

The NHS is currently creaking and approaching collapse. But this is not because the system inherently does not work.

It's ->

Essentially there is a central, nationally administered fund, paid into by all of us based on our income, which is used to provide healthcare for anyone who needs it, usually without additional fees 'at point of need'.

(Some payments are still required, including for prescription meds and dental ->

Look at any of the multitude of countries in the world where universal healthcare has already been set up. Such as here in Britain, where capitalists have been assailing our NHS since its Inception in the hope of being able to destroy it so they can force us all onto for-profit insurance.

So "lining up against the King" is hubristic... But BEING a king is not?

I think the Guardian and I have somewhat different views on what that word means.

Unfortunately, that's because America is in the process of being turned into a pseudotheocratic dictatorship, in plain view, proudly, and in accordance with centuries of historical examples.

Equally unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be anyone in power there with any interest in stopping it.

I actually hope they do. I would watch the he... the Duat out of that.

I wonder why Kumquat Commodus hasn't insisted on having it renamed the Department of Crimebusting or something. 🤔

And this is why internet discourse will never solve any of society's problems.

This itself is the opiate.

I've known a lot of people who used copying this way, as a kind of shareware system. It's why I've never had much truck with the massively profitable multi-billion-dollar games industry that a) "piracy is theft" and that b) every 'pirated' game is a lost sale. Clearly neither is true.

Makes sense, thank you. They're a picky pair, though. We've so far found precisely one shoelace that one of them will play with. But the search for acceptable toys continues. We'll get them with something sooner or later. 😁

Ah, bribery! Excellent. I will give it a try, thank you, it's very much appreciated. 😊

Thank you, @river-snow.bsky.social and @charlottetangle.bsky.social - I welcome the suggestions and your thoughts. I may try some of those, and see if we can make any progress. The priority is always going to be whether they're okay, obviously. As long as we can help them feel safe, we're good. ☺️

No ship of a class named for that man deserves to be called Defiant.

Trump's rise to the presidency is a symbol of America's capitulation and submission to everything it was founded to repudiate.
